Magnet swap or new hum ?

Re: Magnet swap or new hum ?

Hey guys,

I am not a hybrid guy! :laugh2:

Maybe you'd remember John, I tried some of them Custom coils and 59b coils, custom coils and 59n coils, custom coils and a2p bridge coils, gibson 498t coils and 490r (measuring 8.10K so its hot and its ok ;) ) coils.

I generally liked the #43 slug #42 screw coil versions more.

BUT, I did not like the unwound strings with those pickups. I love bright pickups, but the tone from the unwound strings ended up being either too CC like (with the a2 magnet) or too c5 like (which I do not like that much). But I can see why you love them (with the a2 magnet) since you thought a PG was too bright in the first place. ;)

It's all good, but them suckers are not for me. I have great fun playing my hot a5 PAF clones (in the bridge). I am sure that you'd not like my 8.75K PG+ as much as I do. It's all tastes and it's all good!

Christian,

Try one for yourself. The CC/59 or a2p - custom coil in the slug position, and PAF clone screw coil - with an a2 is something you could like, me thinks.

It would be somewhere between CC with an a3 magnet and PG. It does have sizzle, is smooth in the lowermids, but not too much. But is not that bright as a PG. Basically, think of a PG that is a little darker, but has more uppermids, a little more smooth on the lowermids, but with more definition on the bass and highs. It has great harmonics, I gotta admit.

But stil, I think a hot a5 antiquity smokes it (given my tastes).

BTW John you gotta try an a5 (or a4 depending on your guitar) antiquity!

John: Im not doubting you at all buddy...I just relly dig my PG's and my Ant's. There is just something abtou those 2 pickups that I really, really like...I might try a Hybrid one day but for now Im prtty happy as is...

Dr. B: After reading Bach to Rock, Ryan and John rave about them I relly did think about it but like I todl John, I just really dig these PG's and Ant's too much to even want anything else...I just like a good fat PAF that's a little on the bright side w/o being icepicky...thats why I LOVE the PG's.

Yep I do remember...I like em alot and after pulling the bridge pickup out and putting a 59B in it's place,I really began to realize what I was missing....I stated these aren't for everyone...

You like the PG+ and I pulled mine and it resides in my pickup drawer still...LOL.....Though most of the time we've been on the same page...Your advice is always dead on also buddy!

I'm glad you love the PG and I love the bridge version myself brother....All I was trying to say basically is that you can't assume anything about something until you've actually tryed it,but you already knew that....

The PGB is great and so are the Antiquity pickups....Agreed...:) I'm a little off today,so please excuse my sense of being overly opinionated or negative....

Christian,

We have the same tastes man, I know what you mean.

Sometime when you have some extra cash, you could contact Jim Rolph, and get him wind you a set of PAF clones 59's like 8.35K and 7.80K. He should keep a record of the ones he makes, ask him to do the same as he has done for me. I guarantee that you'd have a excellent "fat PAF that's a little on the bright side w/o being icepicky"! ;)

That said I have to repeat that I think PGs are the best non-custom shop PAF clones ever made!

Re: Magnet swap or new hum ?

easy buddy...Im not anti-hybrid. Im just so damn happy with my PG's and Ants that I feel no need to try them. I feel that a PG set is simply an amazing set of pickups...I woudl have put PG's in my Les Paul but I got a killer deal on the Ants so I decided to try them...I love them and they are gonna stay in that guitar. If I find mant more killer pickups Im gonna have to buy another LP!
