Magnet Swap - What Size

I just got a new Charvel San Dimas and I love it, I find the stock JB to be a bit bright/flat/generic all at the same time. The guitar sounds really good but I think it can sound great with a small mod. I have an Antiquity JB that I would like to use but I do not think it is 4 conductor, and even if it is with the whole "six pack of sound" thing going on it would be a wiring nightmare. Would an UO Roughcast A5 get me closer to the more open, warmer Antiquity JB sound? Also what size magnets do I need 2.5"? Thanks for any replies I may receive.

Re: Magnet Swap - What Size

Yes 2.5" is the right size. I have an A4 in my JB, it makes it warm and sweet. You might like the UOA5 too. I don't care for rough cast because I can hear the texture.

So you use a polished A4? Did it make the lows looser? That is something I do not want. When you say you can "hear the texture" do you mean gritty highs?

Re: Magnet Swap - What Size

No. The lows are really nice and accurate with the polished A4. I love it. It's sweeter than just a ballsy A8.

Yes when I tried roughcast the highs were less extreme but yes they were gritty. It's like the appearance of the magnet made sense to hear it.

Re: Magnet Swap - What Size

Yeah, the Antiquity JB is 2 conductor, btw. To me, a JB seems to do what a JB does no matter what the magnet. It isn't as sensitive to magnet swaps, as say, a Custom. Sure, it changes, but it has this inherent sound to it.

Re: Magnet Swap - What Size

The only mag swap I liked in a JB was an A2 magnet. It sounds ok in Mahogany guitars.

Best get a bunch of magnets. They behave differently on different pickups, especially if the construction is unusual (e.g. 2 rows of Adjustable M5 hex poles instead of slug and screw).

I found some experiments led to real success and others the original magnets were best.
