Magnet swaps: anyone ever tried....

Many people have tried it here with the fat Ceramic in the Custom. Waiting for them to chime in.

Not sure what's the official forum name for it. Custom Plus? Double Custom? Custom-er?

A2 in a Demon is very nice...softer high end with a smooth bass and more mids. I ended up liking the A5 a bit better however because of that bit of bite it naturally has.

You want to talk to Clint 55 about this. He has done quite a few double thick mag experiments. I think he has the most real world knowledge on this here.

As a matter of fact I have one that he made. It’s a double thick A2 in a pickup with one Custom coil and one Distortion coil. It’s a beast of a pickup.

I loved the A8 in the Screamin' Demon. Also liked a single thick ceramic in a JBL (80s Lydia Daniels) I had. Unfortunately, the pickups became microphonic after I did the swaps.

I prefer to make mine. I epoxy 2 together and then remagnetize them using this.

Cermag is the most comprehensive store. They can also make what they don't have listed. People don't like their prices tho since they're in England.

Some of the US stores have short bars. I think some of the common double thick mags are available here also but I don't remember where.

And that right there is why I won't ever swap magnets in my pickups. I've read wayyyy too many posts that ended just like yours. They'd swap magnets and inevitably destroy the pickup by the time they were done. They'd always be microphonic and put to the side, never to be used again.

No thanks.

It's not hard to repot them. Techs will also repot them for you for not too much money.

If a pickup becomes microphonic, it's not hard to fix it.

You can repot them. It’s super easy.

I've done more pickup surgery than I can even remember and that has never happened. Easy enough to cure microphonics if it ever did, but it shouldn't. Only ways I can even imagine this result from a magnet swap is 1) failure to put the pickup back together correctly, 2) if it had a cover, failure to re-melt the wax before reinstalling the cover if it was potted, or failure to melt a small amount of wax in the cover or use RTV before installing the cover and not letting it sit with a clamp on the cover, assuming the pickup was unpotted to start with.

Oh, you're so brave.
Don't believe everything you read.
You must be reading posts by gorillas or quadriplegics . I have done countless mag swaps and pup wire changes (from 1 or 2 cond to 4 cond) over the past 15 years and have never EVER had any problems of any kind! It's a simple procedure that anyone can learn to do and requires no soldering skill.
