Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

BloodRose

Professional Scapegoat
Ive been wanting a nice, but inexpensive RG to give the 80s neon treatment to. Wanted a 770 reissue, but just too much.. MF has a model that has a maple neck with red tooth inlays that I think would be cool, but im not sure on some of the spex. Model RG450MDX
Its got a mahog body, which is prob a plus. wizard III. (how does that compare to a wizard?) Has the Edge Zero II. decent?

What pup colors would look best on red? Im guessing purple and green and maybe yellow. But not pink..

Thanks

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

I'll caveat this by saying I've never played one, but the Wizard III has more of a C-shape (like an original wizard but a bit thicker) rather than the D-shape of the Wizard II.

The Edge Zero 2 is similar to the Edge Zero but with some cost cutting and is the same trem as on the premiums AFAIK. Folks that have them so far like them, a big improvement on the Edge III. More info here http://www.ibanezrules.com/namm/2011/hardware.htm

If this is what you mean I'd go with red pups, knobs and tip, keep the guard black or go for a complete 770 copy with a red mirror guard...

according to Ibanez Wiki (a very useful site) the Wizard III is 19mm at 1st fret, 21mm at 12th. The original wizard was 17mm at first, 20mm at 12th. III is also slightly rounder radius.

Statistically it's the same as the Wizard II on my RG321MH (watch out they change the names of the necks every year...). Personally I prefer the original wizard, but I think Living Dead prefers the II. On my RG321 it's obviously thicker and feels like it's got a slightly flat back, which I don't really like (a D-shape? i dunno). I'd say try it if you can, but in the greater scheme of toothpicks to baseball bats it's still ibby thin...

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

considering going for a yellow BC rich GS too.. those are cheap and have an amazing neck. Just can only use one pup..

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

yeah, thats the one.. I agree with your pup choices as far as making it look its best.. this one is not really the right color for a complete rainbow treatment I guess

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

I just saw this in the new MF mag! Pretty sweet if I do say so myself. When I saw that it was mahogany I did a double take. Kinda odd.

I like the 770 idea a lot. It's probably what I'd do. That or yellow pups with yellow knobs and tip.

And yes! I do indeed like the II. It just feel right for me. I can't speak on the III but I have a feeling I'd dig it alright.

You..... You are the one that has given me this aweful GAS......:friday: LOL

yeah, the mahog made me double take too.. I love the colored inlays, but wish it wasnt in red so more colors would fit..

I love the way the gunslingers play, but rather have at least 2 pups.. Any guesses how much it would cost to route for a bucker??

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

Interesting that it's got a mahogany body. I've been wondering about these EZ trems and how they are tonally, since the have a small block to accommodate the zero resistance system. Quite a plus to have locking studs even on the lower end guitars.

Anyway, for the kind of $$ the new RG is going for, I'd rather look for an '86 Roadstar, which came with an Edge, various finishes and pickup configurations. The necks are a medium C with a fairly flat radius - mix of trad. and modern that works very well; 400 series have an oil finish, 500 series painted. The only problem is coming across one that corresponds with gas :). There are two ravishing ones on eBay at the moment: a black pearl RG530, and a pink RG420, both HH.

Glad somebody likes my fruity abomination. :friday:

Maybe you could get a body made to your specs and slap a Gunslinger neck on it? Then you could paint it how ever you want...

Or...

Swirl that ****. :D

Now doesn't that just make your mouth water? :naughty:

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

funny.. Back in the day, I thought those were wretched.. Now that Im much older and more .... ah.. ahem... muture, I think they are wicked! I still dont like the swirl as much as a set up like yours tho.. But I do LOVE the disappearing pyramids...

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

Not too much a fan of those neon RGs actually, really wanna try putting green pups in a blue rg though...

And I would say get second hand: My two prestiges were got for ~£400 each and were ~£1000 and ~£1600(with inflation) respectively new!

Re: Mahog RG?? other Rg questions

If you're looking for a good mahogany bodied RG look for a used RG520.
You can pick them up fairly cheap.
They're MIJ.
Has a wizard neck.
and the original Edge trem.
