Maintaining an oil finish

Just scored a strat neck on ebay as a gift for my father. It's one piece Brazilian Morado or as i'm seeing online most people just call it Pau Ferro... Anyway it has an oil finish. I've never had an oil finished neck or a neck of this wood... so I'm not sure what to tell him when it comes to maintaining the finish on it. How do you guy do it on your oil finished necks? A quick wipe down with some tung or linseed oil every once in a while? I'm probably over thinking this... but I figured i'd ask anyway...

Re: Maintaining an oil finish

Pau Ferro is pretty oily in itself, much like Indian Rosewood. Any traditional oil (linseed, lemon, tung,) once a year or so will be fine. Any more than that, and you're just being redundant.

+1 to what he said, its already an oily wood and some any of the three oils mentioned above will work great...just remember that with oils and wood a little goes a LONG way.

Congrats on the find btw, any pics? :D

Good Lord, that thing is stunning! The back of the neck should received enough moisture from typical playing that it won't need much attention. The fretboard should be oiled once a year at most, and the headstock about the same. Anything more and you're wasting time and oil. Remember to always wipe off the excess oil after letting it sit for 5 min to reduce all that slippery string crap that happens when guys slather it on.

Congrats on the amazing peice of work. Great steal!

I cannot farking wait to see this thing in person! I was sneaky and showed him the pictures as i'll ocasionally show him eBay or craigslist ads that catch my eye... I really wanted to see what he thought about it. He was enthralled! Little does he know it'll soon be his...

Re: Maintaining an oil finish

Dude, is that the 22 fret maple neck that you're bidding on?

Re: Maintaining an oil finish

Nah. The listing's over. It's the pau Ferro one with what I believe to be a walnut skunk stripe. I was looking at a few of the maple necks though. Those were kinda my backup incase the one I got went up too high in price.
