Make a 1 ch amp into 2 - Part 2 - CLIPS!!!

As promised I threw together a quick set of clips with a few vantage spots on the Amp/Quickmod.

I'll try and do a few more short clips next week with a buddy's Fender. These clips are pretty short and simple. Just a few Chunks, open chords and lead line to hear the differences. In a couple of clips you may hear a knocking noise. It's not the amp but the clothes dryer running before I remembered to shut my door. Ahh...recording at home!

Here's what I used this time... '95 Tele Special with a Seymour Duncan Lil 59 in bridge. The Epiphone Valve Jr modded with a Radiospares Output Tranny, Choke, other circuit mods, 80's Russian Military spec EL84 into a '74 Marshall 4x12 with 25w G12M blackbacks.

Here's the original thread about the Kasha Quickmod where you can basically create a 1 channel amp into 2 channels or 2 into 3, and so on and so on...

The Amp was set at 12 o clock (approx 5 on volume) for all clips.

1) No Quickmod - just the amp as it is

That doesn't sound bad at all. It adds just the right amount of gain. This device seems perfect for a "clean" amp like the Valve Junior can be or a Bassman or something else along those lines. I don't think it would work too well with an already gain heavy preamp. Curious how it would sound with a Plexi or JMP. ;)

The clips are promising. IMO it's a cool little addition to a clean amp. That's why I am looking forward to the clips with that fender amp.

sample no 2 gets the OD from the amp or the QM ?

btw nice vibrato!

Actually Erik there's a pic I have I should post with producer Keith Olson holding the original Quickmod, who used the Quickmod on most of the big rock records he produced. Story has it he had this stock Marshall combo, probably a 42xx series that he didn't want modded. He used the Quickmod for many big hit records back then. It really works with most amps. There's 2 versions one for Fender styled amps and one for Marshall styled. That's basically all there is. The Marshall type ones only have 2 tubes in the quickmod based on where the impedance matching stage is. The Fender style has 3 since that stage up front.

Fingerace, The first clip is the only one where the Quickmod is byspassed. All the others it's all Quickmod. Now I would assume that with amps that have more than 1 12ax7 your really starting to blend those preamp gain stages more.

I wanted to add I would have had the Post Gain louder if I could to even thicken the tone more, but it was so excessively loud as it was even at 6.

I think that sounds pretty damn cool. I guess I don't understand if the mod is footswitchable, or you simply turn it on or off...or control with your volume knob.

Great sound from it however...very organic, you can hear the tubes burning.

Andy,

It looks cool, I am just not sure I see the difference in this and a tube preamp pedal. It also appears to have the footprint of a pedal. What does it do that say my SFX-03 does not do? Or the Mesa V -twin or other similar pedals? With the SFX-03 I would actually get 2 more channels and not just one.

Re: Make a 1 ch amp into 2 - Part 2 - CLIPS!!!

It is footswitchable! That last pic shows the switch I used. I just didn't do any specific clips with it on, then off, then on again. I will do that the next round though.

As far as a difference between this and a pedal... the pedal is powered separately and hits the front end of the amp, where as this actually takes advantage of your amps circuitry and taps into the preamp stage. This is in essence getting your amp modded, without actually defacing/changing the amp in anyway. It is also self powered via the connection to your amp, thus nothing else to cause noise in the line.
