Make Your Own Picks

Re: Make Your Own Picks

Looks like they've been around a while but this is the first I've seen the thing.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

Kinda turned off by the idea that each pick will need to be sanded down... but its a small price to pay for fun and convenience.

I'd still get it. I'll use my regular picks to play and make my own just for fun.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

I don't mind sanding them a little to finish. It doesn't take much to smooth the edges of delrin.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

I saw it on some website some time ago and said I'd look into it sometime after, but forgot.

Honestly though, there's two things keeping me from going for it.

First, for $28-$30 (punch and a sheet) I can buy 42-45 EJ Jazz IIIs, or 84-90 Fender 351s (the two kinds of picks I use).

Buying Fenders off the shelf is actually the same price or even slightly cheaper than buying a punch and a sheet, because a sheet yields from 56 to 72 picks according to them (I'm guessing the higher number might be a bit stretched out). Sure, the punch will pay for itself after that, but it's gonna take a while. I go through about a dozen, maybe two dozen picks a year (and that's really stretching it!). By that logic it'll be almost a decade before I can say I saved money by punching my own picks.

Second, I'd probably have to find my own material because those are some p***y thin gauges!

I can't stand paper thin picks. So limited in attack options- from light brushing to light brushing.....

Re: Make Your Own Picks

This got me thinking about making my own acrylic picks. I really liked the thinner V-picks Vinnie sent me. I found a company on the net that has 12" square sheets of 1/16" red acrylic for $5 plus shipping. I wonder if the punch could handle the harder material, but it would probably only take a few minutes to cut one out on a scroll saw and smooth the edges. Fifty $4 picks for the price of five V-picks might be worth a little labor.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

My brother got me one for my birthday. It's pretty cool. Wish he'd have got the jazz one, but he didn't think I'd like it. Of course, I only use jazz picks

It's pretty damn cool. It's more of a novelty, but how cool is it to make picks out of old CD's?

Re: Make Your Own Picks

I showed this to my wife who's really into arts & crafts and she ordered one. I'll let you know what its like when it arrives. We also ordered some blank pick material. We're gonna see if we can print on it. If that works, that'll be cool. If not, I was thinking of just printing something on paper and adhere it to the blank material - then punch it out. Kinda like a business card that you can use to pick with.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

Heck, old credit cards, used iTunes gift cards, stuff like that. I would definitely make use use of one.

Re: Make Your Own Picks

I wonder if it can punch brass. I've got some pieces of my last drummer's old cymbals around here somewhere.
