Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Nah. It was only wet around the edges from the rain. The tree had been dead for a while.

The ferrules arent very well aligned. I'm thinking about filling them and just using a tail piece.

Check out this ebay item - 360373873688 the individual parts are also sold separately
I use his bridge as the nut as his nut is way too narrow and it perfectly matches the width
af the fretboards sold by this shop - Bruceweiguitars

Look foward to your progress!!

Beautiful project, but take your time, bro, take your time. The tree has waited this long, so can you!

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

hat tuning are you using? My 22.5" is Open E low to high E,B,E,G#,B,E . My 25" is Open G low to high D,G,D,G,B,D . Both are strung with SIT's. 10-46. Eliminate the .010, move the .013 & .017, a single .021 plain, then the rest of the set. The tension is close to the same so I get the same feel out of both. Ive actually never even played a steel guitar. lol but i plan on using mosty open E and open D tuning and starting with a set of elixir 11-49's

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

.011's will sag under the weight of the slide. As for slides, I've tried a few and I really like the Shubb GS-1. It's ergonimic, has a wooden handle (great when it's cold), and it stand up ready to play.1022 014.jpg1022 021.jpg

Now i feel obligated to paint the headstock pink and glue some hair to the body. Haha

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Ok i must make a disclaimer..... I REALLY suck at playing slide.... Especially in the lap position since ive never played a steel guitar before. Not to mention i haven't drawn on fret references yet. So try to focus on the tone rather than my playing lol

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Call me crazy but I think I liked the tone of the coil split better sounds sweet. You ever thought about putting strap locks on so you can play standing up and sitting down?

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

I plan on putting strap locks on it.

I like the way it sounds split too. I'll eventually put a triple shot on it so i can use all 4 modes.

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Are you using a socket for a slide? That's great.

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

No it's a short slide i use so i can use my middle finger without removing the slide. But that's a good idea!!! I'll grab an 18 or 19mm deep socket out of the toolbox so it'll span the width of the strings.

Oh ok. I know the type you're talking about, but it does look like a socket in that video. I got a good chuckle out of it.

Re: Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

Oh man, that is too cool for school lol

How come you didn't put a finish on it? or fret markers?
