Making my own C/JB or C/59. Are there instructions?

I have a Custom, a JB, and a 59. I'm considering trying a hybrid of some sort in my Les Paul. Are there instructions anywhere for doing this? How difficult is it?

It's easy enough without instructions provided you know how the wiring works, but here:

If you make both, you'll have parts for a 59/JB. Too bad you can't readily get a double screw 59 or a double slug JB, then you'll have all three hybrids in their optimal configurations. The 59/C works pretty well with the Custom screw coil and 59 slug coil, too; and I believe that was the preferred configuration when it first began life as a forum mod.

IMHO, the JB slug coil offers the best split tone of the bunch.

I was thinking of doing some myself so this is handy.

If you get HBs with 4 wires it’s even easier because the bobbins are not soldered together, right?


I thought the 59 in the 59/Custom was a neck 59, is that the case?

I agree on the split tone. I like the custom but the JB is great

It makes no difference since you have to get at that junction anyway, except the single core cable lends zero versatility.

Absolutely not. I was able to get the site corrected after making a stink.

The trembucker is still ambiguous, but the Gibson-spaced model is now clear:

Harmonically rich hybrid humbucker that uses one coil from the 59 Model bridge and one coil from the higher output Duncan Custom model.

HI. This is my 1st post, so Hello everyone.

Hopefully I'm not derailing this thread too much with this question, but it is related.

I recently picked up a set of SH-1 pickups. The neck suits me but the bridge I'm not sold on. I've listened to a few SH-16 sound samples and i think it suits my tase in tone in the bridge position.

I found a trembucker version of this pickup, that's priced pretty good. Do you think I should say away from it. You seem to have some experience with it.

Second question. Has anyone tried to swap, in a SH-16, a ALNICO 3 magnet in place of the ALNICO 5. I like the sound of the A3.

The TB-16 is also 59 Bridge screw coil and Custom slug coil.

Don't get hung up on magnets. Besides, the overall tone is strongly dependent on the wind. Listen first and then decide if a magnet swap will be an improvement.

What guitar is it going into?

What bridge pickup is it that you like with an A3, by the way?

Well the guitar is a 2004 Epiphone Les Paul Custom. It definitely has a maple top, so it's not dark sounding.

I've listened to a two or three different sound samples with various Alnico (2-8) magnets being swapped in the same pickup. I just liked the tone. No a biggie if it is not worth the trouble.

Is the difference notable between the TB-16 and SH-16 with the pole spacing?

Miniscule in general, but others will likely disagree. I only have the one LP that has a Custom. Everything else is trem-spaced, though not always populated with trem-spaced pickups (and they don't all have tremolos).

Well from the sounds of it, it shouldn't be a problem using the TB-16 with the TOM that's installed.

By the way the LP is a Korean made guitar. Compared to my old 87 arctic white Gibson ES 335, i'd say the fit is equal and the overall finish superior on the Epiphone.

I'll try to keep an open mind on the tone of the TB-16. Before i consider a magnet swap.
