Making videos for YouTube etc.?

How do those who make videos for YouTube and the like go about it. I'm partly interested in what video equipment, but more so about how you go about getting a decent recorded sound alongside the images themselves. I'm not overly interested in the video processing software itself, as I have Adobe Premiere Pro available to me. The hardware and sound recording side I'm all ears for.

For background, I gave a bit of a recording a go last night using my Canon 7D hooked up to a Sony ECM MS907 microphone. To say I wasn't impressed with the recorded sound was an understatement (ignoring slightly out of tune guitar and sloppy test playing).

Tell me how you go about it then, I'm curious.

What are the tools you are using out there; iPhones, iPads, VCR recorders, HD capable DSLR's, something more professional, others? Are you capturing the sound directly into those devices, or are you recording separately and syncing stuff up later. I'm interested in the full range of approaches, tips & tricks. If you have examples, then so much the better.

I am not a video guy, just use a Logitech web cam, but the audio is my iso cab > interface as the sound source.

That's an idea I hadn't thought of - we have a cheapo web cam around here somewhere. That way, I'd get crappy video with good audio, which is what counts for amp demos and the like.

Something else I thought up, especially for pedal demos, is to simply combine still photos of the knob settings with an audio track recorded on the computer.

I just film with my brothers Sony camera (the times I ca) used to do old videos with a Panasonic Handycam and record the guitar (miced) through cubase.

I have used a couple small vid cams, but the best sound reproduction comes from my old regular Motorola DROID phone... its nearly spot on, and can take the super loud abuse! I just click and then send it right to youtube from my device... its kinda nice and easy...

Yeah, but what is the process for embedding the sound recorded in Cubase into the video recorded by the Handycam and then coverting the finished product into the format required for posting on YouTube?

If you have a video editor like iMovie you can "slate" your video. Record to your DAW making sure it hears the "slate" sound, you can just clap if you want. Then when you go to sync your video to the sound file you line up the visual clap/slate to the audio clap/slate. It's best to do one at the beginning and one at the end. When they both line up you're in sync.

It is for MAC owners, at least newer MACS. You could use Windows Movie Maker too I think? As long as it has a separate time line for audio and video that the audio can be moved on.
