The JB, I'm told, responds very nicely to a maple bodied guitar. Scott Ian loves this combo. Jerry Cantrell uses what is essentially a slightly tweaked JB in his G&L guitars (are solid maple).

Barettas were typically poplar. A very few maple and maybe even a few alder.
I've had SDs and JBs in a few solid maple bodies with either ebony or rosewood boards. The JB shat all over the SD. Based on what you say you're looking for, the JB would be the way to go.

Limited to those 2, I would go with the JB and use a 300k volume pot. I think the Custom-Custom might be more in line with the sound you are looking for though. The Demon is definitely not the pickup that makes me think 80's Brown Sound. Its a great pickup though.

I'm probably the biggest Demon fanboy on this site and I would go with the JB in this one.

Later Barettas (post 85) were mostly alder and poplar. Earlier ones were mostly maple but it's still possible that there are some post 85 maple bodies.

no argument there. some of the Kramer cork-sniffers consider the bodies from Sports better than the ones from ESP. my Baretta I is definitely from the ESP era and I've had it re-painted 2x and seen the wood (it's poplar). some of those were known to have been maple. many moons ago, I had a '85/'86 'nana head Baretta that just slayed, but it's been way to long to remember much about it to determine what it was or which supplier the body came from.

100% Demon in Maple, and nothing else. Spongy attack of the Demon is about the only thing that could possibly be right for Maple; just ask George Lynch!

"Spongy attack" is what comes to my mind when I think about the Custom Custom, but the JB has a softer bass attack too in my ears (the Custom has a tight attack in my guitars when compared)
