Maple neck for my project

Hi guys,

I’m modding my old strat and want to put a maple neck. I found this unfinished project on the local classifieds and the neck seems to be a single piece maple 22-fret from a Cort.

I would like to know your opinion on the shape of the neck, quality and work that needs to be done prior to mounting it.

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Walter

Looks kinda like a Fernandes headstock

The frets are beat to sh!t though, might not be much left once you grind them even.

Also, you'll need to ream the headstock for almost any decent tuner design. And probably cut a new nut.

Fun project, neck value $0 - $15 though because it needs a lot of labor to get anywhere

Quality looks good, it looks to be in really good shape. I dunno if it is just the picture, but those frets look really small. You will probably have to re-crown and level them. Common thing with used necks. I would make sure the neck fits good too before buying it. You can always shim it up, but that is a pain. Most important thing is to make sure it feels good in your hand.

Half dozen layers of Boiled Linseed oil, and these things are fun... best case scenario it'll need a refret soon, though. Worst case? Immediately.

Could be nice to expand skillset or if you need an extensive project.

BTW, that is not the body that I will use. He’s selling the body, neck and a boss sustainer/compressor (mounted inside the body...) together. I just need the neck and then will figure out what to do with the the parts. He sanded the body and neck, so that is my starting point. I negotiated and I’m getting everything for 50bucks. I figured is betrer that the chinese neck I order from Amazon for 25buck which I returned immediately.

I’m willing to do all the work needed. This project has been evolving for years, so I don’t mind the time and effort. Plus I want to learn how to do mere things.

Did a build with a rosewood board neck that looked just like it, made for a kickass guitar. Sold for $400.

Are the frets chewed up across the board or just #s 1-2-3? How much undivoted fret height left, and are you willing to live with a couple of the deeper ones near the nut, or will you level to the lowest common denominator or refret entirely?

The heel bugs me but it's probably fine.

Heel is as it should be. One of these necks worked well with a Fender Japan body and the Charvel Model 1A body it ended up on for me.

I got one of those $25 Chinese Amazon necks
Other than a new nut and some wipe on oil
It works just fine

Re: Maple neck for my project

I got it! Seems to be pretty cool and it looks in better condition than my old neck. Definitely a single piece maple. I will post some pics soon and/or maybe create a new post for my project and ideas for pickups and wiring.

How are the frets in reality?? I looked at the only pic you had posted and couldn't in any way agree with the opinion of trashed - they looked barely worn to my eye.

The fisrt 3-4 are a bit used, up to 9-10 with minimal wear and the rest seem great. I’ll post some pics over the weekend with some ideas I hae for my project.

That's not a one piece maple neck, it's actually a two piece maple fretboard on a maple neck.
The frets don't look all that bad. A simple fret leveling/polishing will take care of it.
That neck on Amazon is actually pretty good and may be worth your consideration instead of the used stuff.

Really? As far as I understand, if you can see the seam and/or grain difference then is a maple board on a maple neck; and if you can’t it’s a single piece. Plus this one has the “skunk stripe” on the back to insert the truss rod. Maybe you can have a look at the new pics and help me figure it out.

Right now, there is another thing on my mind. The neck heel is 56mm and my neck pocket is 55.5mm, any tips on how to proceed? I’d rather enlarge the pocket than reduce the heel, but am not sure on exactly how to do it.

Huh...that's actually quite useable in all likelihood

More dirt from string corrosion than divots

Re: Maple neck for my project

What is the 4 knobs behind the bridge for?

The previous owner tried to integrate a CS-3 Boss Sustainer/Compressor into the body. I’ll install the maple neck into my current body and leave this body as it is. It is very heavy compared to the other, I guess mine is basswood and this could be alder, right? I’ll see if I can fill most holes and make it TOM bridge with strings-thru-body.
