Re: Maple or Rosewood?

The Ebony on my jem is just superb! I love it!

but if you insist maple/rosewood - I'll go with the maple.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

After playing gtr for 24 yrs I finally tried a Maple fb & now I'll never back to rosewood/ebony. Love the feel.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

I dunno,

I had a thing for all maple necks once, but now I don't have a preference for either one.

Back in the day I was learning guitar, it seemed 90% of the cheap guitars had rosewood fretboards (they probably still do, most likely due to wood quality issues) and I really wanted one.

I now own a couple of guitars with a maple fretboard and the 'mystique' seems to be gone.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

I'd have to say ebony. I love maple but hate when an unfinished maple board get's all nasty looking... you can't see the grime w/ebony!

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

Rosewood fingerboards for me :)

i like the extra depth and sustain they add to the tone. i normally prefer darker sounding woods on a guitar.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

coool

anyone else care to share or elaborate on the differences betweeen maple or rosewood???

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

er isnt this supposed to be in the guitar room?

i dont have any prejudices to fingerboard woods, if it plays and sounds nice it doesnt matter what it is!

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

I gotta admit, other than looks, I can't tell one from the other. I have both. What kind of things should I be looking for in terms of "feel" or action, or whatever it is that makes them different?

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

what about pao ferro? i think thats whats on the SRV strat, but i never tried it. i havent decided on my ideal neck/ fingerboard wood but pao ferro looks cool.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

I think both are equally good just depends if you want the brighter sound of maple or the warmer even sound of rosewood.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

It's like dills said, you want bright and sometimes weaker thinner sound go with maple, if u want warmth go with rosewood. I like rosewood more because to me it feels faster because of the glossy finishes that most maple fretboards get which feels like crap, plus i like a warmer sound in most cases.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

nepalnt21,

pau ferro isnt what stevie actually used on his "number 1" strat. He used brazillian rosewood which has alot of streaks and resembels pau ferro and thats the reason fender puts pau ferro as the fretboard on the srv strat(brazillian rosewood is alot of money and rare.) pau ferro is actually a brighter sounding wood than rosewood, almost as bright as maple.

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

for fretboards....rosewood only because i find that maple fretboards tend to have this terrible oil on the that makes them sticky.....as for necks, they both have their advantages....

Re: Maple or Rosewood?

I like both, my natural inclination is for rosewood, a bit darker toned and I like the feel. But my Tokai has among the best necks I have ever played and really changed my opinion on maple necks. Brighter and snapier ( spelling???) response.
