Marshall 1960AV speaker question

I have a newer Marshall 1960AV cabinet and I was under the inpression that it was loaded with vintage 30's but, V30's are rated at 60W but my cabinet is rated at 280W. Do you know if my speakers are infact V30's or are they some other marshall/celestion creation? If they are not V30's, does anyone know how the tone differs from V30's or what other speaker the tone is close to?

I have the identical cab and I don't know why each speaker was rated for 70 watts a speaker,but they are in fact V30s...

John, I thank you very much for the quick reply and also the answer I was looking for. For a minute is was feeling like I got hosed by marshall with some knock off V30.

You're welcome brother...I own the same cab...What a great cab also! Bought mine brand new..Payed like $869 for the darn thing several years ago,but it was worth it..

The vintage 30 was originally concieved as a pseudo-reissue of the original 30 watt celestion. At the time they couldnt get alnico for the magnets so they used ceramic. The original cone was no longer available so they used the closest modern equivalant. Being they used modern materials when they tested it they got a 70w power rating. But as they idea was to make an modern version of the 30w speaker they decided to name it vintage 30 and all the confusion began. Sorry just figured I would answer the mystery to the name.

Yeah, but Vintage 30's have always been 65w, not 70w. So still, why are these 70w. And the speakers say Celestion/Marshall, not just Celestion on them. So whats up with that?

in unrelated news, I just scored four new V30's from avatar off ebay for $275. It looks like they're clearing out some extra inventory, so if you're in the market check their listings!

As long as your AV cab has 4 V30 speakers,enjoy it and don't sweat the small stuff! :)

Both Marshall and Mesa rate their Vintage 30s at 70 watts each. The original Vintage 30 was designed and made for Marshall exclusively in the mid 80's, hence the Marshall/Vintage label on the back of the speaker. Celestion subsequently added it to their normal production line marketing it as a higher power handling, vintage sounding speaker rated at 60 watts. I'm not 100% sure about the power rating difference, but if your an amplifier manufacturer competing against Marshall, building cabinets using the same speakers, and Marshall's cabs are rated at 280w, are you really going to rate yours at 240W? The marketing game tells me no, especially when most heads are 50 to 150 watts. What's the harm?

Maybe they are built so bad that you loose 10W of power on the way to the speaker. :smack:
