Marshall Haze 40 watt

tried one of these the other day when I was trying out some guitars at my local shop. I believe it's 40 watts, made somewhere in Asia, 600(I think) CDN. The ten minutes or so I was playing it it seemed nice, fairly versatile, kind of a classic/modern blend.

Any thoughts about this amp? It seems a nice size for gigging (some plans in the works there, if laziness or fear doesn't prevent us) in a small bar. Had some nice tones. Some built in effects, although that's really neither here nor there for me.

Re: Marshall Haze 40 watt

IMO, the Haze 40 has more of an old-fashioned Marshall voicing. On every example that I have tried, there is a noticeable lag when switching channels or engaging the Effects. My solution is to stay on the Drive channel and adjust the guitar's volume pot.

what are your thoughts about value for the money, or alternatives in the same price range out there?

Re: Marshall Haze 40 watt

Marshall Haze 40 + 4-way footswitch + overdrive/distortion pedal = giggable set up.

I am not sure where the loudspeaker is sourced but it does seem that its characteristics have been taken into account in the overall voicing of the combo.

I do not know enough about amp prices in Canada to say what alternatives are available in the same price range. Personally, I would be inclined to find something pre-owned. e.g. Marshall JTM series or the ubiquitous Fender HR Deluxe.

My personal choice is the Fender HR DeVille 410. A Marshall JTM 30 or 60 with Made In England Celestion loudspeakers would be just as good. The recent Blackstar 30w combo is worthy of your attention, also.

Re: Marshall Haze 40 watt

I borrow a friends HR Devill 410 now and then. It's a great amp, and they sometimes go on sale here for a comparable amount to the Haze, give or take $100. ('course, that probably means the Haze will go on sale for $200 off: damn, I wish I had a lot of money!)

I'll keep my eyes open for used. Wasn't really in the market, just a minor case of situational GAS (or AAS, I suppose). There are some nice prices these days for tube combos, though, and lots of options.

A buddy told me his friend said we should all remember we are currently living in the "good old days" when it comes to gear prices. It'll probably never be this good again.

They're decent for the money and they get real thick when you run them wide open, not the cutting plexi sound or the ballsy JCM800 thing. A lot of that could be the speaker. I'd like to see what a V30 would do to that amp. I like how the Haze is pretty easy to EQ and the channel voices aren't as dissimilar as with the DSL. The DSL has more gain AND headroom, and so the DSL is by far more versatile.

A treble booster with the Haze 40 can get you a lot of that Beano album tone. Nevermind if he actually used a rangemaster on that album, but it just sounds great with the Haze.

holy crap, FuseG4. You know way more than I do! But the Beano quote I understood. I love this forum!

LOL I don't know much in reality. A relative of mine owns a Haze and so Ive gotten to play around with it, and back when I had a DSL I got to do a good comparison.
