Marshall Jackhammer

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I had it in my rig for a few years. I liked it! Fun pedal... although of the two modes, (overdrive and distortion) I found the OD to be the better one. The DS was a smidge too compressed and bassy. The OD channel was just right... balanced and dynamic.

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

Yep, that's a pretty good representation of the basic tone. It can get a little gainier than that; that sounds like the drive is about halfway up in that video.

thanks B2D for the quick replies. you found the Distortion mode compressed and bassy. how does it compare with other high gain marshall amps in a box, say a Crunchbox?

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I'm not that big a fan of it. It's definitely on the harsh side of things. If you're looking for raunch, I think it might do, but if you ever expect a smooth type of overdrive, you can forget about it. All that being said, though, I only paid like $30, so I guess I can't really complain.

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

The Jackhammer pedal is, essentially, the same as the pre-amp circuitry in the overdrive channel on the old Valvestate amplifiers - right down to the (in)famous Contour pot.

In my local guitar store, you could guess the age of the last person to try the Valvestate amps by whether the Contour control was set to scoop the midrange out or to fatten things up slightly.

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

i'm convinced by the OD section of this pedal. any comments on how good or how sh*** the distortion section sounds?

I thought the whole point of the Valvestate amps was to provide a massively powerful solid-state power amp that would never, ever go into clipping. Then you put a preamp tube into the preamp to give it some tube feel, compression, distortion, etc. I could certainly be wrong, but I don't see how a completely solid-state pedal could have the same circuitry as a hybrid valve preamp.

The highlight of the pedal (and Funkfingers actually convinced me to bring it out of my old-gear drawer) is the OD. I actually have trouble calling it an overdrive. I think they mislabeled the mode selector. It should have been Distortion on Channel 1, and Muddy, Bassy, Garbage Sound on Channel 2. On second thought, maybe that wouldn't fit.

yeah, i've read that the Dist section sucks. i already have an OCD for my overdrive needs. hmm...

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I've had one for a long time, don't use anymore as I use my amp for all my sounds but when I had a traynor I used it all the time. Like someone said the distortion channel is super bassy but the OD channel is awesome and really the two modes are really both distortions, just with the dist. mode having a lot more gain. That said I used to be able to get wicked metal tones on the od channel, it is super versatile and can go from ac/dc type tones all the way to extreme metal

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I like half that pedal. The distortion side doesn't do anything for me. I got really good tones out of the OD side of it through a Peavey Classic 30 I used to have. I don't use it at all since I sold my Peavey Classic 30 because, ironically, it sounds like crap through my 3 Marshalls.

I haven't really tried anything else that was marketed as a "Marshall in a box." Possibly the Fulltone OCD. which is a killer overdrive pedal in it's own right, but as cheaper OD/DS pedals go, the Jackhammer is a favorite of mine.

i watched youtube vids. Dist channel turned me off...it's a no go then.:eyecrazy:

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I have it, but don't use it. As has already been said, the OD side is pretty nice. The distro sucks.

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I had one, sold it.
Crunch tone is okay I guess if you have nothing else, but otherwise it's definitely not going to replace an amp sound.

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

My Shredmaster was getting beat, so I bought the Jackhammer and very happy with it. It's a decent backup to the shredmaster. I don't use the distortion channel though - way too compressed for my taste, and I don't need that much gain.

Are they similar sound wise as in can the Jackhammer get the chug (radiohead style) of the shredmaster

Re: Marshall Jackhammer

I plugged this in last night just to see if it was halfway decent, and I decided it is. It can definitely get a Marshall crunch on your clean channel. Not nearly as smooth as my SD-1 GT, but that's not what Marshall is all about. I suppose it could be useful if I decided to plug it back into my pedalboard.
