Marshall JCM 900

Re: Marshall JCM 900

Ive been a 900 user for abot 15 years now. I bought a Dual Reverb 50W combo. For about 13 years I A/B'd this with a Super Reverb. The OD channel was all I really used. I love the tone I get with this. I am eventually going to buy a head also. About a year ago I bought a Bogner Shiva and that is my main amp, but the gain on the Bogner is more organic and more musical, but for certain things I like the gain on the 900 a ittle better. Its a heavier sound where the Bogner is more loose sounding. Don't get me wrong I love my Shiva, but I really like the 900 too. I leave my 900 at my bands practice space so I am using it solo now. The Clean channel is a little weak in the sense its not very clean, but you don't buy a Marshall for cleans now do we:smack: . Since I have been using it as a solo amp I am learning how to dial in a clean sound, but it just does not compare to the Bogner or a Fender. The Drive channel is excellent. I get some really nice overtones with it and I can control it with my attack very well. I would buy one again. no question about it:27:

Re: Marshall JCM 900

Here is what I dont understand -
People, myself included, seem to dig the "modded 800" tone so much. It's like so many products are built around that general tone, whether they be od pedals or specific heads, etc.
Now the jcm 900 has always been called "poor" from what I have read. I've got to say I was impressed by erik's clips and I'm going to bet that a jcm 900 mk3 or slx would be pretty close to a modded 800 that people dig. Im really close to going after a 2100slx with el34 tubes since its all right there. the el34's the 4 preamp tubes and a marshall. i mean am I wrong here?

Re: Marshall JCM 900

Nope, you're right on. The problem is, Marshall got in to that game late so everyone was already getting Soldano's and Lee Jackson amps and such by then. Only the true loyalists stuck by.

Unfortunately, a lot of folks put the reputation of the 900 series on the shoulders of the Dual Reverbs with 5881's, which is wrong IMO. Many never heard of the MkIII's and even more write off the SL-X's simply because they are a 900 series amp because of the reputation of the 5881-loaded DR's.

A local tech who has worked on mine a couple times offered to buy my MkIII 2100 from me each time I took it in to his shop. Naturally I said no. :)

Bludave, what year is your 900? EL34's or 5881's?

Re: Marshall JCM 900

Financially speaking a good 900 with El34's wont break the bank. Everyone one is lusting after the 800s, jubilees or boutique heads. If all you want and need is a great gain tone these heads are a great idea. I'm gonna have to get me one. Should i look for a 900mk3 or 9002100slx?

Re: Marshall JCM 900

With what I see in your sig, look for a MkIII. If you can't find one, then go for the SL-X. They will sound a bit different from each other (SL-X has more gain on tap) but both have great tones available.

Re: Marshall JCM 900

These amps have 2 volumes right? So the solo boost is right there in the head already? That's f'ing great. Got anymore clips I can hear of your 900?

Yup. Master A and Master B. I love that feature. One channel, two separate switchable volume levels. I'd have to look and see what else I have recorded. I know I have some recorded practice sessions with the old band before the power tranny went. I can't wait to get it fixed. Then I'm going to get a 2x12 rather than lugging around the 4x12.

Re: Marshall JCM 900

If I came across a DR cheap and it had 5881's, I'd have it swapped over to EL34's in a heartbeat.

that's exactly what I did a number of years ago. I found a JCM900 DR 100watt halfstack in the back of some old pawn shop. Asked the guy how much...He said $600 takes it all.

OK! First thing I did was take it in and have it converted to EL34s, and replaced a bunch of components with better ones. It served its purpose at the time, but I am tired of it, and looking to get rid of it...actually, Im getting rid of everything !

Look for a 2100 MKIII. One just went for $455 on Ebay. I used to have a 2555SL (a Slash mosel that is the same as a Jubilee) and I got rid of it. Why??? The 2100 sounded better. Yeah, everyone raves over the tone of the Jubilee but, IMO I have a hidden Jem that sounds better. Like I said before, those that have played it know it is the real deal.
