One popped up locally for a decent price. Never played one, but they any good? can you get a good tone at medium levels 3-5?

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

JMP's are legendary amps.

They are however retardedly loud - one of the loudest amps Marshall has ever made. Depends on what you're using it for. It definitely fares better on a stage than in the bedroom in terms of headroom.

That said, I played one through a half stack in a small NYC brownstone apartment at low low volumes and it still sounded awesome.

If it's a good price in good condition, I'd get it.

I think the RI has an effects loop in the back panel, so you can run a processor or whatever through it, get great tone, and not kill everyone with the volume.

I would go for it if it's a decent price.

I run mine clean and with pedals...Awesome amp..Been doing it this way for years...Mine is not a reissue actually.. ;o Amp pictured behind me in the avatar photo.

I've got one from the late 90's - no effects loop. Later on I recall, the loop was added.

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

Great, great, great amp... Unfortunately, extremely loud and DOES require a high volume. 3-4 on that would be very loud. The only way to do it is jumper the channels and use an overdrive, or use some kind of attenuator or isolation cab. Then you can also bias the tube a little bit hotter (not much or run through tubes quickly), get like 15w speakers with a fast breakup, or even use those yellow jacket things that let you run EL84's.

Beside the volume problem, the amp is spectacular. The FX loop is great, but it does awesome running FX on the front end like they used to. If I still had my 1987x, I would have sent it in to get a power soak mod. Once you get those tubes all toasty, it distorts so nicely that you can play all day long on it.

If you can't regularly run the volume pretty high, I would recommend the 2061x. I have played that and trust me when I tell you that once you get it a bit loud, the magic starts to happen. You can get all the goodness of the 1987x at more tolerable volumes. Plus they're handwired and the 1987x's aren't (if that sort of thing matters to you). None of the Class 5 or 1 watt series really can achieve the same magic.

I have seen them used for 1 hour and sold for $700. An opportunity exactly like that came on Ebay once and I hesitated. That turned out to be a big mistake.

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

it's an EXCELLENT amp. it offers high/low gain trebly channel and high/low gain normal channel. i love the treble that only this and some vintage marshalls provide (such as the original 80s JCM 800 2204). bridge the channels to mix the treble channel and normal channel. it's loud yes but the clip at rehersal volume is just enough. at 3-5 you'd get a really saturated distortion.

50W EL34 marshall tones with a high treble channel...how much better does it get?

I've modded the darker channel side on my 73 50 watter to be more JTM 45/Clean tweed Fenderish and then I run some pedals into the front of it..The brighter side I never use...I Like also to either remove the volume control bright caps or lower them "alot" in value..

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

I have only used them, never owned. Loud if plugged straight in and going for overdrive, but I had good results at lower volume with an OD pedal. I also have heard other guys get a really great crunch at reasonable volume with a pedal.

I say go for it.

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

The 1987 is advertised as a Plexi ressue, but I found out form looking around on the internet that it was modeled not on a Plexi, but on a 72/73 Superlead; more Gain, brighter, tighter.
Not sure, but possibly they took one of Lynchs best Superleads to do the 1987 reish, but that could be hearsay.
Thats somewhat confusing, cause Marshall also reissued a 73 Superlead. Same amp?

I'd grab it if I were you. Use pedals for dirt with lower volume playing and you've got all that volume on tap if you ever need it.

Re: Marshall JMP 1987x RI

Last time I had my 1987x out I felt it sounded better clean. I am "dependent' on reverb and delay though. There's only 1 convenient place to put pedals - in front of the input. :-)

I do have the ability to set up as wet/dry/wet and use a rack unit for reverb/delay, but that's a pain to set up, so I don't.
