Marshall JTM 30

How does it compare to the JCM 800's and 900's?

The circuit is fairly similar to the 800's but the JTM 30 comes with either 6L6's or EL84's, can't remember which, so that will make the sound somewhat different. The JTM 60's have EL34's, and sound much more similar to the 800's. I owned a JCM 600, which is almost the identical circuit to the JTM 60, and it's one of the best stock Marshalls I've ever played. I still regret selling it :blackeye: :yell: , but I know Tom love's the hell out of it.

Re: Marshall JTM 30

The JTM30s are great little combos for rock and blues. I think they have EL84s in the power stage. I have a JTM60 combo (JTM30's EL34-powered big brother), and it's the most versatile tube amp I've ever owned.

I wouldn't want to compare a JTM30 with a JCM800 or JCM900 - it's smaller, it's different, it was built to a different budget.

The great thing about JTM30s and JTM60s now is that they are discontinued and no-one famous plays them - they're great versatile amps and you can pick them up quite cheaply.

Simon, is that the great Lester Paulson in your avitar?

I believe it is the very same sir. :) You should have seen him in the previous song when he was playing a Strat! :lmao:

I believe it's still legal in England to have you drawn and quartered for a comment like that sir. :burnout:

How about the amount of gain they have?

The Boost channel of my JTM60 has a lot more gain than I ever use. The Gain knob goes to 20 and I never use it higher than 10. That's for Classic Rock with a Les Paul. I'd guess the JTM30 is voiced the same.

Here's the handbook for the JTM30. It has some advice on settings, including "Modern Hi-Gain":

Re: Marshall JTM 30

Thanks for the link. I am assuming from reading that handbook the JTm may be a little short on gain. I have a modded JCM 800 but it is too noisy. I was going to have the mod reversed and get a JCM 900 when I thought about the jtm 30

Re: Marshall JTM 30

I tried a JTM60 and 30 combo in a little music shop in Petaluma, CA (same town where boogies are made) and if my parents hadn't been along with me on the trip I would've bought one on the spot!

They're sweet little amps for light rock and blues and would probably sound insane with a good DS pedal. Thats pretty much all i can say about them... sweet. :smoker:

BTW wasn't Les Paul's real name Lester William Polfus?
