Marshall JVM versus 1923 or others?

Which Marshall combo amp to you prefer?
I've always had Fenders and want to try a Marshall combo but unfortunately there is no Marshall dealer around here. I have all the top Fender amps but do not have a Marshall and I'm thinking of the JVM 100 watts model.

Thanks for any experience you can share about Marshalls!
I'll be playing strats and a large variety of songs except for heavy metal.
Lots of R&B and classic rock.
Thoughts?

Re: Marshall JVM versus 1923 or others?

I had never heard of the 1923 before this.

anyways the jvm sounds pretty great at all volumes and the tone and the feel strikes me as smoother and more refined than things like the DSL or TSL. but the 2x12 is heavy and LOUD and IMO a little expensive, and maybe it's overly complicated as I could probably live on the OD1 channel alone.

compared to the JVM I find them a little harsh but I still think the newer DSL40 combos they came out with are awesome. if you don't need the big lots-of-kobs JVM combo the DSL will give you a more "cranked amp" feel as it gives up the goods at a little lower volume (you didn't mention how much power you needed). Boosting the crunch mode with a drive pedal is a great sound.

both amps have a nice clean.

Marshall 1923C 85th Anniversary 50W 2x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp
(full name)
cool that's what I thought it was after looking it up
basically it's a DSL50 in a combo. I used to own a DSL50 head.

anyways yeah I think the 1923 would sound really good but you have to get the volume up at least above 3.5 or 4 before the power amp starts adding more gain, otherwise the amp sounds kinda thin and weak.
I did not notice that with the JVM. I thought it sounded good almost down to zero volume, dunno if that's a consideration or not.

Yes......lots of sessions where amp won't be really cranking but in the end, most interested in the absolute best sound between the two so I'd take the volume if that meant the DSL series?

The 1923 is a DSL50 combo it just has a baltic birch cabinet. Save some money and just buy the DSL unless for some reason you want the anniversary just to have the anniversary.

If it's all down to which one sounds better regardless of price, it's gonna depend on your ears

the JVM has the OD1 orange mode that kills for a lot of rock and hard rock. first time I played it was pretty amazing.
go used and maybe you can afford both eventually, they each are different and great amps.

I have a 1923 50w head. It wasn't that great and didn't have very good sustain with the stock tubes. I had to rebias and replace the tubes with the Shuguang EL34B's and Tung-Sol eccc83, but the sustain improved greatly and there was a bit more clarity and more 3d sound. I have been wanting to sell mine to get a JVM for a long time, but just haven't got around to taking pictures and putting it up on Ebay. It's a great amp, but the JVM is superb. I urge you to check out the Satch JVM as it's a really great twist on the JVM theme. Pricey but really great amp.
