Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

I play deathcore in a band... and need a new amp I love my Marshall JCM800 but it doesn't get the deathcore very well it does metal well deathcore... no... so JVM vs DSL for deathcore/8 string stuff. thanks! and any other marshall recommendation is good.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

The JVM will get a heck of a lot heavier than the DSL. I wouldn't use the DSL for any kind of modern metal, there are just so many other amps better at it.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

Is your JCM800 a channel switcher, or is it a single-channel? If it's the latter, have you tried boosting it with anything? I'll admit that it's an old school sound, but lots of death metal bands have used JCM800s pushed with a Boss DS-1 or similar.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

it has 2 channels High and Low.... guys this thing blows your ears out at levels I need it... XD I know the JVM and DSL don't need to be that loud to achieve the tones I want as I have used both already and cannot decide... I will be using this amp for gigs only so I can turn up hella lot since I am also buying a POD HD PRO X to use my PC to play.... jamming etc but for gigs marshall...and I have tried it all and YES I am using a OD pedal

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

Either one will work but the JVM can get you the more modern sounding high gain on OD2 red.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

You could always run something like the Bogner Uberschall pedal into the front of the JCM800 set up as clean as you can get it. I'll bet that would be pretty killer.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

One thing about some of the newer higher gain Marshalls is that they don't sound as rich and fat as the JCM800's base tone.

You didn't mention which OD you're using, but I'd suggest spending a couple hours at a well stocked music store, auditioning all their OD/Dist pedals. Bring your amp.

The fattest you can make a JCM800 is to plug into the 2nd input and practically dime the volume and gain so it sounds like a plexi, then put a good Distortion pedal on it. Fat clean and fat gain. I guarantee it'll sound bigger and meaner than the buzzy highgain channel on most new Marshall/Peavey/Blackstars.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

$345 on eBay.... anything more affordable? I was thinking the Blackstar tube pedal? I heard that through a Dr. Z once sounded amazing....

so to achieve this tone... turn the gain to like nothing put a distortion in front and then that's it?

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

Focus less on what you hear through the grapevine and more from what you hear through your own ears. Go to music shops, plug in and play. Great tone takes a lot of trial and error. Anyone and everyone with a great tone can tell you that as an almost universal rule of nature.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

I recommend avatar cabs. you can get a 2x12 for about $450 brand new, depending on which speakers you choose.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

yeah about that... what would be a good cab?
I am looking 2x12... either marshall or mesa...

how much is this pedal? O_O

I wouldn't get a Marshall 2x12. I used to have a 1936 and it wasn't all that great. Mesa 2x12s are supposed to be gtg, though, but I would also look at Bogner, Avatar Vintage, and Avatar Contemporary 2x12s as well. As far as speakers go, it's hard to go wrong with a pair of Celestion Vintage 30s, or an Eminence Governor and an Eminence Governor speakers together in the same cab (I actually prefer this combo over Vintage 30s).

As far as the amps go, I used to have a JCM2000 TSL and currently own a JVM 410H. Both the DSL and the JVM should serve you well, and with the JVM there are a bunch of mods you can do to it. I've done a few to mine and they have improved it. But on the flipside, I think you might be better served with a Splawn Nitro (if you like lots of mids), an Engl, a Bogner Ubershcall, or even a Blackstar. I love my Marshall, but there are better choices for what you want to do.

But, putting an overdrive in front of your 800 like some here have already suggested might be a good idea to try out first. My personal favorite is the MXR Wylde Overdrive, but I have doubts that it'd fit your tastes. I have heard of Death Metal guys using a Boss Metal Zone as an overdrive because they can sculpt the tone a little more with it. And I see Metal Zones go used for anywhere from $20 to $40 every once in awhile, so that might be worth trying before going through the expense of buying a new amp.

Metal zones disappear into the mix... unless you want to give your vocalist space they leave a lot to be desired.

Re: Marshall JVM vs DSL vs ?

I have both a JCM 2000 TSL head and a JVM 2x12 combo, for deathcore I'd not spend the money on either. The JVM has a ton more gain and more voicing options, though.
