I just bought a fender american series telecaster hh. When i was playing it with my Mg 10 cd, i noticed that as i turned the tone knob on the guitar to any position, the guitar tone didn't change. Only turning the contour knob on the amp directly, causes a change in tone. Is this normal with this amp? Meaning adjusting the tone knob on the guitar itself makes no difference?

Ok. Sorry to be all devil's advocate on this. But is this from 1st hand experience? Meaning do you have an MG10 cd yourself, and tried it with a fender? Just wanna make sure, coz im in florence italy right now, and i need to go a long way if ever i need to have my guitar checked, thanks.

No, that's not normal. The tone knob on the guitar should have some kind of effect on the tone. Try another amp to see if it's the guitar just in case.
I have used that amp with my guitars before and the tone knobs on my guitar worked.

All I'm saying is that from the fenders that I've played the tone knobs had more subtle changes, but I see the guitar you have is not anything like what I've played so I really dont know. Also, I have not played the mg10 but you can see in my sig that I have the mg100 head and I have played many different mg amps, and I know that these can tend to be very colored and if tone knob changes had subtle effects the amp coloring may be severely overpowering them. Additionally due to the size of your amp (unless you are running to an external speaker) certain frequency changes may not be significant enough to be noticeable.
You very well may have a problem, perhaps the tone knob is not even wired in the circuit of your guitar, but it is at least equally as likely (i think) that everything is fine.
So I would also agree with greendy123 to try another amp. Then you can at least determine if there is a problem on the guitar if other amps do not yield a change in tone as well when turning your tone knob.

Sounds like a cold solder to me. I would take off the control plate and check and re-solder every wire that goes to the tone pot. Also, the Capacitor might be f*cked, so a new cap could help is re-soldering everything fails.

wow.... strange... but stuff like this happens from time to time across all guitars price points... But like the other guys have said i've also come across a few Fenders where the tone pot hardly did anything at all for some reason, yet was wired correctly... The first issues of the American Deluxe series with Early Noiseless pickups come to mind... so i can see their point.... but glad you got it fixed...
I have an MG10-(non-cd model).... bought it off a friend for $15.. he tried to learn how to play and gave up.. Amps are sometimes more important in the over all equation of TONE... the MG10 is a thin, noisy, buzzy sounding amp. In the future as you can afford it grab yourself a better amp and hear the true tone that tele has to offer... My MG10 is a toy to me really... a micro Marshall..

So i just brought it back to the shop and opened it up and found the problem. Freaking weird though...it was a brand new fresh from the box american series 60th anniv tele. Who would think such big defects could happen to such a high profile guitar. I have other american fenders also, and nothing like this has ever happened. I guess fender's kinda slipping up with their quality control...either that or i'm just one unlucky schmoe..oh well! Thanks again!
Thanks for your thoughts on that, but actually the amps i really use are a peavey classic 30, and JCM 800 back home. I'm just out of the country right now on vacation and brought my mg10 with me. yes it is quite a crappy bugger but quite portable. heheh no chance in hell was i expecting a good sound from this. Was just wondering why the adjusting the tone knob wasn't affecting the sound. Never happened to me with any of my guitars or amps my whole life. And i just bought the tele here in italy so i had nothing else to try it on but my crappy mg10.

cool..... i love guitar shopping when i travel... saddly here in Canada you have to pay import tax on everything you buy outside the country... so sometimes it is just not worth it

heck...if you're in canada why would you want to buy abroad anyway? Tom lee's always got great stuff.=) And you've got like a dozen there. I buy abroad out of necessity coz we don't have as much good selection back home.

I've never had good luck with new guitars.
I've bought a Epiphone V and its bridge fell apart in 3 months
I've bought a ESP/LTD Explorer type with big chips in its metallic finish
And my newest Deal ML XM lost one of its tuner knobs within the first week.
I think used guitars are actually more reliable just based on these experiences. I think it goes back to the whole "use a proven weopon" kind of thing.

Well it is either about finding a used deal, or something i don't normally see in my country... normal big brand stuff is cheap here compaired to buying outside the country... I like the hunt!!!! Here in Ontario were i live there is a ton of great shops everywhere near me...
In Canada i love stopping at every Pawn shop i see in small towns... I once found a Pawn shop in a small town in BC on Canada's west coast.... 8-9 hours drive out of Vancouver was a town called Grand Fort i think.... anyways the guy had a ton of things... i picked up up a bunch of Boss and MXR pedals for $20 a piece... He said only 2 guys play guitar in town so he relies on tourist to take stuff off his hands when he can... I remember him saying he see's one of the guys trading in a pedal or something and the next week he'll see the other guitarist in town come and buy it... he said it would be cheaper if these 2 players just traded among themself's...

hahaha wait this is a funny coincedence..i might actually be moving to Nelson BC this september to study. I'm gonna take this music course there. I know this is kinda of off topic. But would you happen to know about Selkirk college? Is it any good? I applied there for this 2 year music diploma course this september but i know nothing about the school except what was mentioned on the selkirk website. Ever hear of it? Is it any good?
