marshall or messa boogie?

Ok, just wanted to see what you were using it for. That's how I use and OD pedal too, if I'm using one at all. Not to be stereotypical, but many players your age that I come across are always wanting more and more gain. Just turn all the gain knobs up all the way. I was that way myself, I think we all were. I see it at GC all the time. Of course, I've also read that you're the exception, and someone else too, can't remember.

Haha yeah, I'm most definitely the exception. I have my XXX's gain set at like 2-3, and the SD-1 at 3

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Both...My F50 had the best clean channel I've ever experienced...really sweet... Gain channel was excellent too..covered alot of sonic ground a marshall cannot...and it could approximate some marshall type tones (clean channel cranked really was JTM like). It was very touch responsive/dynamic as well, something my Rivera can't equal.

If I had to choose one and one only though, it would be a Marshall.... I could live without super pristine cleans and the gain tones the MESA can produce, the marshall cannot...but I could never live without Marshall crunch and sparkle. Nothing else sounds like it.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Neither! once you have played a Budda Superdrive 80 you will forget any other amp exists. Food + car payment + rent + girlfriend are all that are holding my wallet back....

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Or you could just get what a Marshall is suppose to be when it grows up and get a Splawn . :)

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

I like both.

My Rectifier has a big, huge, saggy sound that no Marshall I've tried can come near to.

But, Marshall's have this raw, crunchy edge to them that I've yet to hear a Mesa (I've yet to hear a Stilletto) pull off.

If I was in a band, I'd want my other guitarist to rock a Marshall.

It's not an issue of gain, it's an issue of tone. Running an OD pedal infront of an amp (always set to a somewhat clean boost, something like tone at 5, level at 7, drive at 3) just puts a nice coating over the amps sound. Tightens everything up, adds some saturation, which lets you lower the gain, and just makes things in general sound better.

I do much the same.

Wylde OD - Vol 10, Gain 0, Tone 4.5.

Since I have such a dark and smooth amp, I like to use the Wylde OD to add some edge to the attack.

I'll also use it with the gain around 2 or 3 to add some compression/sustain to solos.

I prefer it to the TS-9 and SD-1 as both of them seem to "coat" my tone with theirs when they boost. With them it still sounds like a Rectifier, but you can tell there's a TS-9/SD-1 in there too. With the Wylde OD it's much less obvious.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

I know exactly what you mean. Eventually, I'm going to upgrade to a Maxon OD808 or OD820, but for 40 bucks, the SD-1 kicks ass!

I don't know why but I almost feel like that is wrong to do that with the XXX. It's like have a Z06 Corvette and never going faster than 65 MPH. :D But I'm sure it sounds sweet that way. That is a very cool amp.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Mesa Boogie. I just like the tone better. Covers more ground, sounds more Hi Fi to me. I like marshalls, too, just like Mesa better.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Love the marshall tone, mesa sound nice, but i just can't ever get enough of that marshal crunch.

You're sooooo spot on. That's exactly how I view it. The two are entirely different animals and if you can capture both of their qualities and mix them appropriately, you'll come out huge with a ridiculous sound!

Marshall's have a little more of that warmth to their distortion which is a real plus, but they just can't touch Mesa's unbridled aggression and tightness.

Oh yeah, I call the Mesa, too! ;)

I own both. Guess I just couldn't choose.

I like Measa Boogie Preamp Voicings, hence I have the MB Triaxis. I like Marshall Plexi Power Amp Voicing, hence I have the THD Univalve :laugh2:
Then I run the Triaxis into the Uivalve and voila, Everything I could imagine and more! The palette of possibilities are near infinite

Hehe I know what you mean, but I bought this amp when I was into scooping mids and cranking gain, and it's served with me faithfully until now. I see no reason to change it! It's gone with me through my Metallica, Slayer, In Flames, Opeth, My Dying Bride, Shadows Fall, God Forbid, Satriani, Vai, Petrucci, Lynch, and Children of Bodom phases and hasn't never skipped a beat.

That said, I wouldn't mind a Krank or a new cabinet at all.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Mesa.
There is just that sound, response and feel from a mesa, that Marshall's dont touch.
There is the bone-crunching sound that you get from going straight into a mesa, that I have never heard from someone straight into a marshall.
The best marshall's i have heard were with lotsa rack gear and OD pedals. I believe a sound should be found before you put pedals in front of it. And marshalls need the help, mesas dont.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Apples and oranges, man. They're both killer brands in their own rights.

Re: marshall or messa boogie?

Marshall! Once i tried one i couldnt go mesa no more.. i almost bought a Mesa/Boogie Nomad but then i saw it.. i tried it.. i brought my wah and a SD-1, cranked up the loudness and i was hooked. Heck i sold my old computer for that amp lol.. it was the only one they had and it had to be mine lol.. but now i got a much better computer and a killer amp!
