Marshall Studio Series

Re: Marshall Studio Series

I think I read that Celestion just announced a new 10" V-type.
Al

Yeah, found it, called "VT Jr"

Not available anywhere retail yet, but with a whopping 95dB and being a budget version of a $99 speaker that itself is a budget version of a Chinese V30 that itself is a cost-cut version of a V30.... safe to say it's lower spec and cheaper than the G10 Vintage

Seems like the main cost cut point, probably gonna be much better with proper JCM speakers like G12-65's.... unless they revoiced the hell out of it

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Just got the parts today to rebuild my JCA20H preamp into a JCM800. May not nail the tone perfectly, but it cost me less than $20.

Re: Marshall Studio Series

I'm surprised that they did a 10 in a single speaker combo. Nothing against a single 10, as I've used a Laney in that configuration to good effect. It just wouldn't be my first choice unless: 1. It was a great deal, as in my Laney. 2. I really needed a compact combo.

In addition, I have not sensed a lot of love for the 1x10 combo among many.

Re: Marshall Studio Series

A good 10" is a nice way to get some mids at a volume that won't shake the walls but I dunno how well that'll go over with people into modern heavy guitar styles. I think they're not horrible if you stick to low to medium volume.
My mg15 has an 8" speaker that sounds pretty good for what it is... I don't mind the 10" in my Princeton either.
So for home and studio I think it's probably fine. I bet they also wanted to keep things at a certain production cost/price point too

*~6 lbs lighter speaker (unlisted, going on V30 >> Vintage 10 info and extrapolating from the lighter Vtype12" info)

*~2-3x cost saving on speaker price

*95dB speaker, loss of volume vs. 100dB allows em to drive tubes harder without extra trickery... product goal, after all, appears to be "manageable volume for hobbyists", not "loud as all hell"

*Cabinet dimensions smaller by ~2" W & H, maybe 1" depth (or more?)... probably drops another pound of weight

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Plus there's the marketing strategy built in:

"Tone freaks will want the 12" anyways so that forces them to buy the head and 112 extension cab! But half of them will buy the combo first, decide it's not enough, and then get the head and cab!"
That's how that it kinda comes off to me anyways. Smacks of marketing execs lol

They know what you want and had a plan from the start to get your $$ lol

Re: Marshall Studio Series

I wonder if this is Marshall finally responding to modeling amps getting better and them losing business from the home studio crowd. Either way, looks like a move in the right direction.

More like finally embracing the idea that their core customer is a middling-age male hobbyist with a garage/basement mancave or an empty nester...

With money to burn, but more difficulties and wariness than enjoyment when it comes to making use of 100w head sat on a 4x12. Wants less size, less volume, fewer potential issues with wife or neighbors

More midlife crisis 4-cylinder BMW coupe, less 700 bhp trackable monstrosity

Tone freaks will already have a cab with decent 12" speakers, so they won't bother buying the 1x12 cab...

True true I was just sort of mocking them giving you my sarcastic analysis of their thought process.

In a way if you think about it
It sort of makes the matching studio classic cab look like a useless product doesn't it?

Serious Marshall guys will already have a cab for that head.
Half serious guys who want the head will probably have their own cab or go get a used Marshall as they they are everywhere....
Bedroom guys won't need the volume of a 12" so they will be better off with the combo.
Who is the 112 studio classic designed for?
People with money to blow and want something that matches?

When orange came out the the ppc112 that was a well thought out product that orange hasn't offered before, to my knowledge.
Marshall have had 112 cabs before and everyone always goes "why didn't you just get a used 212 they're good, cheap, and they're pretty common"

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Somebody needs to put out a 5/8" or even 1/2" neo 1x12

In light of neodymium speakers, the logic behind regular 1x12" cabs has sort of fizzled

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Only 112 cab I've ever loved is the mesa thiele w/c90.

Many say the older black-shadow evm was better,,,,,wish I had both to find out.

I've got an Orange PPC112. It's nothing to write home about.

Dang I thought they sounded decent to me, just slightly overpriced.
Is there a modem, commonly available 112 that stands out to you?

I also liked the egnater 112 that they put out with the tweaker. Maybe I should have used that one as my example. It seemed pretty versatile and sounded good, constructed pretty well and had a nice g12h30 that worked with a variety of amps.

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Yeah, I exaggerated a bit, lol. It does sound decent in the room, it's just a tad boxy. It's built solidly, though. I also used to have a Vox V112NT which was a POS box with a decent speaker by comparison. The Orange doesn't mic up particularly well, TBH. The mic really exaggerates the boxiness BIG TIME for some reason.

My friend's Mesa Mini Rectifier slant 1x12 sounds a bit better both in the room and under the mic. Still a tiny bit boxy, but better, more in-your-face. I'm not entirely sure a Vintage 30 is the right speaker for a 1x12. I'm sure their Thiele cab sounds even better.

Those Egnater cabs look pretty cool too. I haven't tried one, but I like the specs of the Rebel 1x12.

Hahahahahahahaha I also had the 112 NT and yes liked the speaker but not the box. Kinda indistinct mud with other speakers. No depth or oomph. I had mine for sale once or twice but never got it sold. I think i ended up giving it away cuz I got tired of trying to find the speaker that save it.
And interesting that the ppc boxiness comes out more when you mic it. I found this informative thanks!
Mesa seem well regarded!

Re: Marshall Studio Series

Anyways, I just got the head version of the "Classic"/JCM 800 version from UPS today.

Damn... what an amp! A friend of mine has a Friedman Pink Taco, and TBH, I think this beats it. It's not really an apartment friendly amp, even at 5 watts, so be ready for that if you get one; 5 watts is appropriate for a living room in a house at what seems to be the MV sweet-spot (roughly 7), though, and 20 watts is only a bit crazy. Notably, the 5 watt and 20 watt settings sound a bit different at the same MV, although both are great -- 5 watts is smoother and more rounded, 20 watts is brasher and punchier.

If you're looking for a British-voiced mid-to-high gain EL34 box that can do it at non-stadium volumes... this little guy is the ticket.

Re: Marshall Studio Series

That thing is so sweet you got me gassing. I can't find a picture of the back online, is there anything interesting/out of the ordinary back there?

Fantastic glad it's working out!
And yeah I thought the 5W would still be pretty loud. I could barely crank the 5W/3W el84 Blackheart amp which was my first tube amp, but it never got that loud again once I moved to an apartment.
Nice to hear it stacks up with more boutiquey stuff.
