Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

This amp intrigues me. Don't worry, I don't have $6400 burning a hole in my pocket, but this is possibly one of the best amps Marshall has ever produced.
The most interesting thing about it is that it's marketed as exactly what Hendrix used. I never knew that Hendrix's Marshalls used KT-66 power tubes. Is it true that Hendrix's Marshall tones weren't even EL-34? :smack:

What a beauty this amp is. Years from now, it'll be hugely collectible.

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

I have heard soooo may theories on Hendrix's amps, but never that they were 66's. It's possible, esp since he had 3 eras in his playing. When he started til 1970, his rigs, sounds, and songs evolved a bit.

They have one of these in Hollywood GC along with a Roccaforte. I suggest checking it out.

GC Northridge is OK, Sherman Oaks is better, and Hollywood is the best.
I think I'll swing down there and check it out. I can't even think about buying it, but I'd love to have the slant 4-12 from this stack. That would look SWEET under the metalfront XTC. :smack: :13:

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

The speaker is a type not often seen, huh?

Ahhh don't tempt yourself.

I would love to hear the XTC thru classic style cabs! Esp in Plexi mode!

Me too. I came so close to buying that guy's Bogner Greenback cab. He lived about a mile from me. I just don't have room for anymore sh!t! :chairfall

Or money!

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

Wow! You guys go to Guitar Center Hollywood? I just started going there myself. I must say, that Henrix full stack looks HUGE on the sales floor. Also, they had three VHT's and two Soldano's. We should all meet up for a jam or something.

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

Id kill for just the head, but its way too loud anyway, even if I had the money for it...

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

Jimi played through whatever Marshall he had, and he had a lot of them...FWIW, I have never seen a pic of Jimi with a Marshall head that I knew for sure had KT66's but I have see Jimi witrh plenty of pics of plenty of Marshalls that I did know for sure had EL34's!

Also, FWIW, I have tried the Hendrix Stack at the ATL GC...was not really impressed. don't get me wrong it was a good amp but there is no way it was a $6400 amp...not even close. I have tried several old school Plexi clones lately and to be honest the Marshall was the most "ho-hum" of the lot and it also costs the most!

Yeah, but it's going to be collectible. They're aiming this straight at the Baby Boomer market that has seven grand in thier pocket to toss at something they know they have absolutely no need for.

Those of us that are short on cash and long on getting good gear and getting the job done know that a solid hand-built clone is where the real answer is.

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

I have seen Hendrix 3 times and he used Marshalls that had both El-34 and KT-66.

Those Kt-66 were in 1967~68 era.

It's his KT-66 tone that you hear in Smash Hits (e.g., Red House with a Fender Tape-driven Echo) driving the front end.

Hendrix also used to run cheap cords and jump inputs (Normal/bright) and then again into the next amp.

All controls were max's out to ten and then he controled his volume level for songs like wind crys mary with his guitar's volume.

Another trick was to place his selector switch between the neck and middle position (No 5-way switches back then) to get the neck and middle pups together.

Last time I saw Hendrix he was using Sunn amps and did not have the same tone. (He seemed rather upset as I also recall).

When I return to USA next July, I drag up some pld pictures of his rig and post them

Hendrix could not have used a Sunn model T as they were only available at least two probably three years after his death.

1000s or 1200s (1500s ?) maybe, but not a model T.

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

My question is HOW DID JIMI GET THE MONTEREY SOUND?

I never liked Jimi when I was a kid. Never seemed very sweet, balanced, or musical. Then I rented the VHS tape for the whole Hendrix @ Monterey - I was blown away. Killing Floor (Holy S**t, sounds like a wall o sound), Wind Cries Mary, and Hey Joe stood out.

I even liked his clothes - I saw where Prince copped his style (and playing vibe). I am a Prince fanatic!

After that I heard Band of Gypsies and it all made sense.

Why people make the guitar lit on fire the focus of Monterey is a joke to me. It really was the songs and playing.

What was his sound? Did he have Dual Showman's also?

I read an article a while ago that was written by the Company in California that handled all of his gear during one of his tours and it stated that he preferred the sound of the KT 66 tubes, but he had been thru so many heads in the 3 year period of his career that I got to believe that a lot of it was EL 34's as well. He also recorded a few tracks (Voodoo Chile on Electric Ladyland Live in the Studio) with a Fender Twin. It really didn't seem to matter to much he always sounded like him!

Here is a link to the article, but it basically says he preferred 6550's in his Marshalls and used 75 W Rolas rather than the 25W.

You know, Jimi does always sound like Jimi - BUT
on live cuts where he used the SG it never quite had the same feel and attack his strat gave him. The strat was his quintessential sound. Also, in the studio you can compress EQ, mix, and double to your heart's content - esp with 16 tracks on tap like they did by the 70s.

Re: Marshall Super 100 Jimi Hendrix Stack.

somehow we hhave one of those here, but i dont wnt to try it cause its in a public area, not in a jam room :(

There were Sunn amps, what ever model... Big and loud, but not much on tone.
