Marshall TSL100 head amp hum

Re: Marshall TSL100 head amp hum

When something goes wrong in a tube amp it is nearly always the tubes.Good thing you replaced them first.
However the sound you described sounds like those big meaty transformers just doing what they do - my jcm mkIII does it too. 100watts of tube amp needs some serious muscle, and they do make some hum.
Re: tone....Tube amps really sound best when working pretty hard. That is why a lot of musicians are choosing smaller, lower wattage units these days. Unfortunately its a fact of life - but at least you will be able to hear in 20 years....

Re: Marshall TSL100 head amp hum

Ive had my DSL50 about 8 months now, I get ok tones out of it just not what Im looking for which is a classic hard rock over driven tone., The gain from the pre amp tubes just isn't the same. I would like to pick up an old 4 input 2203 to use the DSL as a back up.

Re: Marshall TSL100 head amp hum

i have the 60 watt 1x12 combo version of the tsl and also had that transformer hum.
i had an issue with the 22 pf screen grid caps blowing and shorting out, couldnt find good replacements so i just cut them out and the amp works great.
the short the blown caps caused was the reason for a constant hum from the speaker no matter what i set the volume too but once i cut them out that problem was solved and the amp has been working great without those caps ever since.

i replaced the stock speaker with a vintage 30 and currently have tung sols in v1 and the phase inverter which sounds great and eh in v2 and v3.for power tubes im using svetlanas.

you can really get some nice tones out of these amps and if you use a booster it gets even better.

ya the rig i am currently toying around with at home is the TSL ontop of an old 800 2204 head that i finally got working last week... if i want i can hook both heads up to my Head Switcher that i use with my Peavey 5150/C50 head rig..... A/B between the 2 heads.... for now i just keep switching them back and forth....

the 2204 is a completely different sounding amp for sure... it has more of the vintage sounding Marshall to it then the pre gain fuzz of the TSL... but the 2204 is the 80's sound not a true vintage sounding Marshall either... but i like that as i'm more of a modern tone kind of guy

that being said.... i think the next Marshall i could see myself with if i ever buy a Marshall again is a plexi reissue just because it would be great in my collection of toys.... can't afford the real deal of course... and that is just thinking out loud... i'm hardly getting a chance these days to get my various louder amps i own any real use... i am more of a collector these days since my gigging band folded... i have band with some guys from work that plays at work functions... we have some rehearsals coming up soon so i hope to get some of these heads some higher volume use at our drummers house and see what they can really do..

i guess between the tech i used tightening the tranny bolts and the new power tubes that took care of some of the hum from the amp... the amp is quieter... both thru the speaker and from the transformer.... it just sounded strange to me as my JCM 800 is nearly dead slilent... my 5150 has zero noise from it at all... only way you can tell the 5150 is on is when you see the power light...

i'm thinking of grabing my head switcher out of storage and trying a rig of a/b'ing between my 5150 and the TSL... metal madness!!!!!!

Re: Marshall TSL100 head amp hum

Had a hum issue with my TSL and it turned out to be a bad 12AX7.
