Marshall Valvestate

Re: Marshall Valvestate

I still use my VS65R all the time. I think its a great sounding amp. Its got some really good tones for classic and modern rock. the clean channel sounds pretty good to me, but I've heard better - not bad for a Marshall and still very useful. I've had mine for lmost 10 years now without any problems. I think I paid less than $500 bucks for it back in the day.

The Marshall "Vavlestate" amps were the first Marshall amps to incorporate a tube pre-amp section and SS power amp section.

Several years later, they attempted to improve on this & re-badged the new line of amps as "Advanced Valvestate Technology" aka AVT. Already having a Valvestate I was anxious to see how much the tone improved with the AVT's... I was very dissapointed. I found the new AVT's to be very sterile and almost digital sounding. They had alot of buzz that I couldn't dial out. The old Valvestate amps sound much more organic and "tube like" to me.

Like others have said tho, there are probably better amps available for $500.

for what it's worth - I had a 2-12" and head version of the old valvestate and like it A LOT. great for metal. I think the Randall G3 line incorporated the magic of the old valvestates and gave it a better housing with a few more options. I still keep my eyes peeled for an old valvestate for a reasonable price, but everyone thinks they can sell their beat up 1-12" marshall hybrid for like $300 - as much as I want one; they aren't worth that price. local guy was wanting to sell his 1-10" valvestate (with no valve actually) for $150. um, right. new orange crush 30-watter is only 2 bones brand new.

Re: Marshall Valvestate

The Marshall Valvestates are excellent sounding amps. Smooth and warm. Very much like their all-tube companions. And now you can find them used for a couple hundred. You won't go wrong.
