Re: marshall vs. crate

I don't have much experience with crate, but my friend owned one for quite awhile. He was always complaining the gain sucked, and the cleans were only half decent. I can't back this up myself, but I can say that Marshall has the legendary tones to keep its rep up

Re: marshall vs. crate

Im not saying I would take any crate over a Marshall Im just saying that I would choose my Crate VFX5112 over any jcm2000 anyday of the week. I am not of fan all crates just the VFX5112

Re: marshall vs. crate

I personally feel every amp has something to offer. I've heard not so great Mesas, and some that were phenomenal...same with Fender, Peavey, and Laney, etc.etc.

I've heard some Crate both SS & Tube that sound pretty darn good. And although I'm a Marshall man, alot of their tube stuff through the years is not that great... and I happen to like their SS gear for the most part (unlike most folks). I've had 2 of the older mid to late 80's SS combos, and a late 80's Microstack and they both gave some great hard rock distortion sounds..not neccessarily "warm" or "sweet" like tubes, but good sounds nonetheless, and using a TS or SOD as a boost smooths them out too..hellfire... good enough for Billy Gibbon's, good enough for me ;)

OK..I'm tangent boy today :D

Regardless, I cannot think of one amp company out there who doesn't make something I'd want.

Re: marshall vs. crate

Maybe the crates do sound decent but, I love my two Marshalls, model 2100 and 2555SL so on that note I will have to fart in Crates general direction!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I second that. I have one too. They brand them V-series though rather than crate. And if it's good enough for Bo Diddley, Billy Gibbons, and Joe Walsh, it's good enough for me. I hate Crate SS, and the Blue Voodoos, but they really did something special with this amp. Even my buddy who owns a DSL 50 prefers this amp over his and noted it has more gain. The digital effects suck though, but I don't use them. Take a look for yourself:

Re: marshall vs. crate

Haha, I have a kid in my electrical class who is an automotive genius, but I schooled him on guitars (he's been playing for a while). He had a Marshall solid state full stack and he said that it sounded amazing. However, he also said that Crate amps are incredible. When I was looking for a new amp, he recommended them and I laughed in his face and began rambling off tons of boutique amps to tick him off :D

Marshall kicks. period. Crate's Blue Voodoo series is perfect for a shredder just starting off. Mesa makes good sounding modern stuff, but to my ears, I prefer vintage Marshall to just about anything. The only exceptions are boutique amps that are better built and catered to sound like them (best of both worlds ;) ).

all tube Marshalls. they are "overrated and overused" he said.
He smokes dope obviously.... :laugh2: .....
Anyway, I agree you can't judge a whole brand of amps, certain models are good and certian models Suck, except for this fact, all crates suck :fing25:
Rock On :burnout:
