I'm curious to play an old supergroup and klipp, but every laney I've tried from the 80s to today has average/decent at best. They're a pricepoint amp. There's plenty of modern marshall stuff that doesn't do much for me too, but there's a few good sounding marshalls available.

Laney all the way. I used to run a VH100 into a 4x12 w/ Classic leads. MY tone absolutely burned. Best Lead tone i've ever played with. Like Vai on speed. The only amp of mine i've ever liked more was my Carvin Legacy combo.

Well I've voted ... I was a JCM900 and DSL owner before I found home with AOR. Just a Pro-Tube might be a JCM800 clone, but to my ears the AOR Pro-Tubes are a differen beast, they are thicker, bassier, darker amps than same era marshalls. I love how mine overdrives, with Spina TS9 its just killer, the boosts are really tone toys. I am gonna also get Bueno boost to get that treble boosted Laney tone if you know what I mean. I am actually thinking of getting another AOR once I start giging again, because I am terrified of loosing this one, its a connection forever. And i will find at some point a SuperGroup too. Maybe a VH too. But my gut feeling that with the right boxes my AOR will give me what I need for many years ahead.

Marshall for me. I just took delivery of the 8th one I have owned over the years...

Well, I like Marshall. But I'd rather have a new Laney than a new Marshall. I mean the JVM line... wow, too many knobs. The Laney GH though is simple and the tone will blow people's heads off!
Laney has always been more cost effective for the same (and by the time the nineties hit, better) tone. I mean my old Laney is as good as a JCM 800 and it was what, 400$?

I've had 2 Laney amps and a Laney cab- the whatever Marshall 800 clone they made in the late 80s, the 30w closed back combo from the same time period with gain and boosts and active EQ o'plenty and a Laney cab w/ 75 watt celestions.

Oh...and a "ghost" Laney- A Jackson (guitars) 50W Tube head.

The Cab by far was the best sounding piece of gear (I kept and used it for many years!)

Now in todays era of better tubes and mods and whatnot, I'm sure they would sound much better, but at the time, I though every one of them had farty lows, and fuzzy highs, and were generally dark and loose sounding compared to the Marshalls I had at the time. The Jackson head had the most promise I'd say because it had a variable mid boost/notch thing- but I ended up running a Marshall 9001 pre-amp into it which was a huge improvement.

TBH, I'm not really sure why I bought any of them at the time! :laugh2: The Shop I dealt with was blowing out the Laney combo- I remember that- and I picked up the JAckson head cos it had more low end "thunk" than the 900 Dual Reverb I bought- which I did NOT like.

The old Linebacker SS combos were pretty good for what they were.

Not to mention they were really cheap (feeling) compared to Marshalls of the day. Screws were always rusting and grills bent, "tolex" felt like plastic. Just alot of cheaper parts (of course Marshall has gone to hell in a handbasket too ,these days)

Overall- just have not been impressed with Laney enough to even bother searching out any of their modern stuff. It's expensive, can't find it locally, and the old stuff has left a bad taste in my mouth.

I always thought of Laney as being a Marshall wannabe.

But then again, Marshall started off as a Fender wannabe...

Laney is guilty of cloning Marshall just once - the first, non-AOR Pro-Tubes. However, I've read on numerous occasion that Pro-Tubes over all are better build amps than JCM800. Supergroup has very different tone from super leads, particularly because of huge Patridge trannies, from what I've undertood. And if anything, it Marshall is the one who is copying Laney with JVM as TT was the same idea years before. Plus, VH really did what DSL was suppose to do - high gain upgrade to classic sound. Laney does not believe in marketing that's the only reason why they are always a word of mouth sort of amp. The Lionhearts are more of a classic rock amp than vintage moder will ever be, its greatly made classic amp, what is vintagemodern? a transvestite of amps? Besides, who would want to play an amp made by a drummer?

Pretty much anyone who is anyone in rock music has played them,. From Roy Orbison to Hendrix to Metallica and beyond.

Laney has had one endorser of note- and he's missing half his fingers :lmao:

Marshall holds first place among the amps who are used as a stage prop with real amp hidden behind. Iommi just happaned to invent heavy metal and he did with Laney. And for those ture afficionado's of classic METAL - Gutter Ballet, Hall of the Mountain King, Streets, three milestones by Savatage were recorded with AOR. Paul Gilbert played VHs for years, so does Mathias Eklundh. And our amps are made by bass player who played in a band with John Bonham and Robert Plant, you guys can go ahead and let unknown drummers make amps for you.

Vintage Moderns are pretty darned good. I think a Budda Superdrive 45 would blow one away but great amps nevertheless. I've A/Bd the TT and JVM for a long time. I think the TT sounds a better than the JVM although the JVM is capable of just a little more because of the extreme gain it has.

I agree that the Vintage Modern is a great amp. You're wrong about Laney though. Players from Arch Enemy, Mastodon, Opeth use them. Plenty of other great players use Laney amps but don't endorse them.

Yep. Truth is nowadays I could think of probably a dozen marshall-style amps I'd rather have than a new production line Marshall, let alone a Laney.

Have you tried one of the Lionhearts yet?

Bogner - PA-lease, its just a german dude who was jelous he did not get a job with Engl so he started cloning marshalls.

Yet to see one available down here. I'll try one when they do appear, mainly because I'll try anything once. I will say this: they do look nice onscreen. It's good to see a Laney that doesn't look cheap and tacky.

I've gotta be honest, it's basically impossible to get worked up about a new Laney (or H&K statesman, or JVM, or whatever's new) when you're expecting new shipments from 65, Bogner and Divided by 13.

I'm not sitting around thinking 'feh, who cares about the 65 marquee club or XTC101B or the FTR37, what I REALLY want to hear is the new Laney'. And given the same opportunity, neither would you.

I voted Marshall but to be honest I've never tried Laney. The local guitar store has some in stock so I'll have to give it a test run.

I am more of a Soldano and Trainwreck/Komet kinda guy when it comes to those ..

I just disagree that Bogner is THE ultimate amp made, tonewise I think its a distant second behind Komet and Concorde.
