It's been years since I picked up my TT50 and a couple with my JVM. I used to have them side by side but my JVM got less and less play time. I have compared every tonal aspect of these two amps I could think of. In addition I also compared a VH100 head with a JCM800 head and a JVM. The VH100 blows me away every time I hear it!

I'm not trying to sell anybody on Laney gear but I have a sincere appreciation for Laney stuff. I've always loved that classic Gibson/Marshall sound but you can get a lot of that and more with Laney. Unfortunately they are not cluttering the shelves across America like Marshall is so people usually don't know much about them. Give me your take. Are you a Laney or Marshall guy?

Re: Marshall vs Laney

Marshall all the way. I have tried a few Laneys and they just don't do it for me. If I had to have a Laney it would be the "unofficial" Iommi Sig, but still the one I spent time with, just didn't do it for me. No matter how much I tweaked on it, I always felt it sounded a bit thin compared to the 900's and DSL's I've played. ( And I'm not a huge fan of 900's other than the SLX model, and I like the DSL much more) But that's just my $0.02.

I really think you would be impressed with a VH100. That's one amp you gotta try before writing Laney off. Seriously, and I've been a Marshall guy for a long time!

Re: Marshall vs Laney

I haven't spent enough time with a Laney to make a fair assessment. Being a huge Iommi fan, I wouldn't mind being able to play through one a few times a week, just to see what tones I could squeeze out. I'm sure part of the reason is that, as you said, Laneys aren't exactly cluttering American music store shelves.

Re: Marshall vs Laney

yeah i have

it was crap

DSL's aren't too bad, i just wish the parts were better. If marshall used quality parts on a DSL it'd probably be one of the best amps they've ever made

besides, i can get an AOR for $400.

what do you mean "unofficial" The laney ti100 is his signature and he uses it, unlike other sigs that are a name-only model unused by the artists who endorse them

You thought a DSL was better sounding than a Vintage Modern?

When I say unofficial, I mean that it doesn't actually have his name on it like other sig amps, guitars, etc.

Re: Marshall vs Laney

yes, yes i did

i didn't screw with the high gain on either but for crunch tones the DSL was better

Well you know what you like, but the 2000 series not what most think of when you say "Marshall sound".

However the Vintage Modern can do both classic Marshall and higher gain stuff. I would be in the market for one if I was looking for another amp.

yeah it does em but not well

it was only slightly more convincing than a POD

The DSL is a little more versatile and that was one reason I bought mine over the VM, but I have been able to spend more time with some VM's and they are AMAZING IMHO. I would still take the DSL over it as a "first" Marshall, just because I play alot of different stuff, where the VM has a completely different feel and doesn't cover as much ground.
