Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

depending on the situation

for a more versatile tone, like from country to metal to jazz i'll take a mark 4 half stack.
but if i'm in a straight up rock n roll mode, i'll take marshall

but i play more stuff than just straight up rock so i'll pick mesa :)

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

For my playing, Marshall is just "it". I love classic rock and when I hear the guitars on the airwaves, odds are it's a good 'ole Marshall (plexi, JTM-45, JCM-800 etc.).

I like both myself. I do like some bands that use Mesa's for their sound, but Mesa's do tend to have a buzzy tone to them, so I prefer the mid oriented, bit smoother, fuller crunch of a Marshall.

Bogner is king of distortion. End of story.

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

It really depends on which Mesa you're talking about. They're quite different, model to model.

If I'm being forced to chose just one, give me a Mark IV.

And yes, they started with Fender transformers and developed from there. They are much more akin to an old Fender than they are to anything else.

This is a playing preference for me, not a listening preference. I love a lot of Marshall tones, just not when I'm playing through them.

Boogie.

I love that chunky, nitro powered chainsaw tone.

But honestly, both kill in their own respects.

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

I voted Mesa for their versatility and options, but the Marshall tone gives me a hard-on too.

Isn't a Mesa just a Marshall knock-off tuned to sound like it is coming through an old lady's nose??? :13:
Actually turns out they're both fender knockoffs:D The Marshall was a reverse engineered Fender, originally, back in the day.

That said, when I first started playing I loved the Mesa sound, after a while, that started to sound like mud. I love the marshall crunch, there's nothing like it. My favorite personally has to be a JCM 800;)

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

I was just kidding about that Marshall knock-off remark. I love the way Mesas are built and look. I bought one in the late 90s and was so pumped. I spent about 30 minutes just reading the manual and looking at how well the thing was built. It was built far better then my Marshall stuff. I owned that thing for about 2 weeks and could never get a sound that did anything for me. This was a 1X12 combo (i think a DC30 or some such). I ended up returning it to GC and picking up yet another Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 head. I also tried a Dual Retifier a couple times which the same results.

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

I never was happy with any Mesa I owned. So I'll say Marshall. I've kept my Marshall 50 watt through the years....though I never play it anymore. It's just to loud. Lew

Then put that Weber Mass to work

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

Hmmm....

tough...none are better for sound really...all personal choice/opinion. MESAs are def built better...no competition there.

If i could only have ONE amp tho...I wouldn't choose the Marshall. The newer more versatile models don't sound very good to my ears (DSL, TSL, etc), and the old ones that sound so awesome are not versatile enough..they do one thing really well, but thats it.

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

Ever since I was a kid I've always loved the Marshall sound. My brother has an old Mesa Caliber series amp, and although it's a hi quality great sounding amp, it's not the sound I'm looking for. Back when I had my Sovtek (which is based on a 50 watt Plexi) I compared the 2 and I preferred the Sovtek.

Re: Marshall Vs. Mesa

I'd have to go with Mesa, Mesas may be a bit harder to get a feel for and dial in the tone you are looking for ... and certainly more so with some models than others, but I think they are they the more versatile of the two.
Although the EQ on the Marshalls is a bit easier to work with, and many have said that the Mesas require the 5 band eq, I kinda have to agree, but even so I still think they are the more versatile of the two. Built like a tank too, and very relaible.
