Martin vs. Taylor

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

Went to a house concert last night at the Star House in Boulder. The guitarist, singer songwriter didn't even plug into a PA.

He had a real nice Taylor 814C and a real nice Martin HD 28.

The difference intone between them was exactly what the guys here have have been mentioning.

The Taylor was as deep as the Martin but also louder, brighter and clearer.

The Martin did not have more bass and was not deeper - but it was warmer and in some ways had a more pleasant tone to listen to. But not as much projection and not as clear as the Taylor.

I liked the sound of both guitars.

He only played the Martin on one or two songs. He played the Taylor on everything else.

I get that from the guitarist in my Bluegrass band...he's got a 1938 Gibson LG-O, and that thing will slice apples in half at 15 feet, if you're standing right in front of it. Zingy and bright.

His Martin D-18 just sounds so full anywhere you are in relation to it. No particular spikes to any frequency, just overall coverage and warmth...I always prefer that he play it instead.

Mine is a 1998 Guild D30 bld

It's got a one piece arched flame maple back, flame maple sides, and a 3 piece flame maple - some dark wood, probably mahogany - flame maple neck. Spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, no electronics.

Made in Westerly, R.I.

Nice! I just got a new bridge, nut, saddle and a refret on my Guild D55. It needed it.... I bought that guitar in '79 and I played it every day. The frets had been dressed a few times, but the bridge was really low and I wanted to have it taken care of. Plays and sounds great now!

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

I prefer the Martin sound but like the Taylor playability.

To be honest I went with a Morgan and a Larrivee and feel like I got the best of both worlds.

Re: Martin vs. Taylor

taylors are too bright for me, I like a throatier sounds personally. I have a nice martin but I would also like to get a nice guild.
