You don't bias 12ax7's, so having an exactly matched set means little. Also, it makes little difference if the tubes match exactly, since some are reverb drivers and some are phase inverters.

If they TESTED different, I could see complaining about it. But inconsistent test readings don't make a tube bad.

HiFi stereo guys look for matched pairs of pre amp tubes for stereo recievers(L n R CHANNELS) Probably what he thought he was doing...but had no clue what matched means. But yea no biasing and who cares about date codes.
But matched transconductance and cathode current the stereo guys look for pairs. And tube mic pres too.
