I played a sweet matchless today, had it krankin, playing some blues at guitar center (more about that experience later :( ) anyway, i went to turn it down, and the master is about at 4, and i hit the master... and its a push pull knob... and it was out, i hit it in and BOOM the amp went into a huge feedback loop and was amazingly loud.... It scared the **** outa me.... I was totally gonna buy it... but then I looked at the price tag... 4000 dollars USED!!@!##!@!

Re: Matchless awesomeness

You can pick up Matchless amps used on eBay for around 2300 if that makes you feel any better. They're expensive, but some of the finest amps out there.

yup. great amps, especially the older ones. to be honest i dont have much experience with the newer ones.

the dc30 is one loud freakin amp for 30w

Just sold my Matchless SC-30. I played it and almost nothing else for about a year when I first got it...but eventually I got a little tired of the grainey quality I heard from it (typical of EL-84's?) and wanted to hear more of a Fender/Marshall tone again. I picked up a Matchless Chieftan with reverb and that amp is the best blend of Marshall and blackface Fender I've heard in a 50 watt amp. And it's cathode biased so the notes squeeze and squish a little when I really dig in with my pick.

I think pulling on the Master Volume knob disengages it...that's probably why the amp Smilemon played got so loud when he pulled on it. It's a good design because disengaging the master volume gives a livlier tone than just turning it to "10".

The Chieftan is loud though. So far I haven't been able to play out with it. My Deluxe Reverb has been all I needed.

Re: Matchless awesomeness

I played an SC 30 and thought it had some of the nicest clean tones I've heard, although I know they can scream, especially with a pedal.

Matchless amps are high, true, but they hold their value well.

Very distinctive and textured cleans. Toothy, textured, a little grainy... Lew

I am also no fan of EL84 amps in general. However, the Matchless Clubman and Cheiftian are both AMAZING amps...I think I like the Clubman a little better than the Cheif but both are great...

Re: Matchless awesomeness

+1 for celtic otherwise try 65 Amps there london model has one channel based on an AC15 (like a matchless lightning) and the other an old 18watt marshall combo. The Marquee has channel 1 based on a VOX AC30 pre top boost and channel 2 Top Boost AC30 (which is exactly the same as the DC-30) I beleive they are cheaper and come with better components (including alnico blue speakers) then matchless.

Re: Matchless awesomeness

I have to ask, which Matchless were you looking at??

Also, if you want a Matchless do this...work hard, save big and get one! They are great amps that are very well made and hold their value VERY WELL. Don't settle for anything less...you'll be very happy when you finally get to plug into your Matchless!

Re: Matchless awesomeness

Celtic makes a couple of Matchless clones for MUCH cheaper $$$.

Although the Celtic el-84 amps are Matchless clones, the useability and tone factor has been raised to a higher level by Scott.

You can not go wrong getting Scott to make any Celtic amp. IMHO
