me and ed roman - not what you think

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

Whew. I thought you lost your mind for minute there! I though maybe you played that skinny necked Ibanez for WAY too long. The McCarty neck is perfect the way it is, IMO. That extended heel helps improve the tone transfer between the neck and body.

Ed Roman practically ruined the Baker guitar.

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

personally, I wouldn't deal with anyone that controversial. there's lots of other reputable dealers out there that don't have a lot of smoke around them. my 2 cents.

I'm surpised he didn't ask if he could screw your wife/girlfriend. I read a post one other time where he asked a customer this :smack:

I wonder if he reads these posts. We get a lot of people coming here, like the guys from Warmoth and such, I seriously wonder if he reads these posts and knows what people think of him.

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

Hmm...was I the only one not that concerned? I know he gets a ton of bad publicity and all, but maybe this would've worked out nicely? Who knows?

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

As someone who owns one large heel 22 fret PRS and three small heeled 24s, to be honest I don't think there's a big playability difference. Anyone who's played a LP or a Strat has dealt with much worse.

As for Ed Roman, I am the guy who started an E.R. debunking page. It got about 1,100 hits last month. I don't think I need to say anything more about him.

cant say i was the least bit concerned when i read the post..however i do live here in las vegas and visit ed roman's store at least once a week... i personally dont think most of the ppl on the forums would have the opinions they do about him if they met the guy and hung out with him..hes almost ALWAYS walking around his store ( i dont really think you can say the same about the ppl who own things like sam ash, guitar center..whatever ) i do see alot more " bad " stuff about ed roman here than " good " stuff... but being someone who actually deals with the guy and his buisness on a weekly basis i pretty much have to disagree with everything i see. currently hes working on a custom V for me right now, ive had nothing but top quality stuff from his store and have nothing but top notch service..i remember my first time there he kept the store open a little later to talk with me and show me new and cool things his custom shop was doing and all kinds of V bodies that they could do...every one of them is heads and tails better than anything ive ever seen come out of gibson and most other guitar building companies. i've seen a few of the "heel-jobs" that hes done and they feel / play / look amazing....i did think it was kinda lame to make an " april-fools joke " out of a pretty well respected / top notch / very kind ( despite what most people think..99% of which i doubt have met him ) buisnessman :)

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

don't believe it until you get the guitar back and you get the bill, from what i have heard.

Well-respected? By whom? Satisfied customers? His peers? Business associates? Based on the folks I've talked to in all three categories, the term "well-respected" seems a bit of a stretch. That said, I've heard nothing but nice things about Mrs. Roman--and a lot of 'em, too.

Charlie D. (founder of the Quicksilver forum) lives in Vegas, too. I'm sure he felt the same way you do . . . 'til Ed bent him over. I had his tale of woe on my site 'til Charlie's lawyers recommended that it be taken down.

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

just to clarify ... i only meant the april fool's joke to be relevant to the notion of ever cutting up that gorgeous guitar's incredible rosewood neck ... i only referenced ER to 'increase the realism' of the prank's comedic effect ... i've never spoken to mr roman and have no first hand opinion of his business practices or customer service or product quality ... i only wrote this fictionalized account of an interaction with him as satire and for comedic purposes ... nothing in my posts on this thread should be construed as an endorsement for or against doing business with him

Well, you had me for that 20-30 seconds. I hadn't had my coffee yet. I think I might have taken the joke the worst of anyone here. I almost picked up my cell phone and called you, then the reality of April 1st hit me. Whew!

As far as Ed's reputation, I've only had one phone call to him. It was not positive. For every one person that has something nice to say, there are about 500 that can relate a negative experience.

Interesting stuff. If you have a negative experience anywhere, you tell at least 20 people over the course of a few weeks. (again this is an average)

If you have a good experience, you probably one tell 2 or 3.

A good retailer goes out of his/her way to minimize the negative experiences. They have far more impact on a business than the positive ones do in the long run.

Ever had a bad meal at a resturant? Did you say something? If the manager was worth his salt, he came over and comped the meal or gave you free desserts and a coupon for next time. It's called damage control.

Mr. Roman appears to have no strategy for damage control. Instead his "strategy" is to try to belittle them on his website or in person (phone).

10% of the world will buy into that strategy, the rest of us see it as BS. He must sell a lot of guitars to still be in business with his reputation being what it is.

The old rule of thumb is that 80% of your sales come from 20% of your customers. He must have a small loyal following that helps him keep the door open. He appears to not care about the other 80% of his potential customers. Not a great long term strategy IMO.

Caveat Emptor.

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

a phone call is kinda a bad way to start off things with ed roman...i will admit their phone service is less than pleasing to deal with..but as so many people are so far away..phonecalls are pretty much the only thing that connect them with ed roman. i know i sit on the phone for a good ammount of time..sometimes going between 2-3-4 people to get to who i actually want to talk to.. however id much rather wait on the phone than in the traffic going through the strip with some crazy taxi drivers who think they can drive like james bond / dukes of hazard. i would have to agree with scott_f on the damage control part of ed roman though :)

Re: me and ed roman - not what you think

i dont think that's a good excuse for him being such an ***face to honest customers who are interested in his products!
