Me new pedalboard, too!

Not to take away from Xssive, but I've been cleaning up my pedalboard, too.

The biggest change was the addition of a compressor - an old Boss CS-2 that I really like. I did a few simple mods to brighten it up a bit. It does the Pretenders stuff really well (although I believe James Honeyman-Scott used a CS-1), as well as Andy Summers and Jamie West-Oram (What is it with those 80's British new wave guitarists and their hyphenated names?)

The DIY Eternity has now replaced both the BB Preamp and the modded-to-hell SD-1.

One major bit of work that doesn't really show: I replaced the old MDF (wood) riser with a steel channel. Now, the back row pedals are mounted the same way as the rest - the support substitutes for their back plates, and provides the ground connection for power, and the audio shield. I happened to find a channel the perfect size in the scrap bin at work, cut it to length and painted it Rustoleum charcoal hammertone to match the main deck.

On the right side, I have the AC power input, main input and output jacks, and a hardwired bypass toggle switch - in case something in the board craps out. There's a matching lid for transport, and to keep the beer off until it's time to play.

I have one space left over - might be occupied soon by either a DIY Rat clone or maybe a second delay pedal.

This will be the rig for the Drexel Class of '85 Reunion gig in May. Now, gotta get learnin' those Missing Persons songs.

I absolutely love your board, especially the way you hard-wired the pedals in without cables. That is a clean, simple, and sturdy pedalboard that could probably survive a collision with a freight train. A+!

Did you already make a thread about your DIY Eternity? I'd enjoy reading more about that.

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

I love XSSIVE's board, but this stands out as my yard stick against which all others are measured. Clean, intuitive and inventive.

Rich, write a book!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

i love pedal boards that you can just plug into and hit the gas!!! i will have to get crackin and make myself one too... i still use Plywood, some tape, some velcro...

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

you know me man i'm an neat freak and all about the details which is why i love how clean your board is and how you went that crazy extra mile of hard wiring the pedals and not using cables between them. nothing kills a nice board layout like a mess of cables all over it and you certainly solved that problem!

nice clean work!!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

Funny, what is now "the extra mile" was a labor-saver back when I invented this thing circa 1981. I was inspired by Pete Cornish's pedalboards, the all-in-one, pedalboard-IS-the-case design. The minimal cabling, the hardwired internals. But Cornish removed all the pedals from their cases and fabricated new flat aluminum plates to mount their pots & switches on. I didn't want to bother making all those little custom plates (with their ugly Dymo labels) and figured since the pedal cases already had the right holes in them, why not use them? From there, I thought up the common-baseplate idea and the rest is history.

These days, with all the pre-manufactured pedalboards, super-velcro, and short patchcords available, I never would have dreamed this up.

Wow, very cool indeed. I have to say though, seems like a very brave move to hardwire everything but the result looks awesome and I'm sure it will be less problematic if you're gigging. Superb!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

i think mike and rich need to mind meld

get rid of the pedal enclosures all together a la cornish ... hardwired a la rich (no cables) ... incorporate the looper with the pictures a la mike .. built in enclosure with lid ... integrated/isolated power supply ... sky's the limit boys .. gedooithin!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

funny you mention that...my initial plan was to rack all the pedals and just have a looper, wah and volume on the floor but part of me does love looking down at all those bright lights and pretty colors hahaha. sort of a basic version of what you said.

the other idea was similar to what you said and i was going to have just the knobs visible through a diamond plate top of the board along with the switches for a looper and have all the guts hidden under it in a cornish sort of way.

however since my board took far to many hours to do as is since i'm so crazy about the details i'd still be working on that idea if i did it hahaha.

I will ultimately be doing this. I've already priced out a rack enclosure with sliding drawers for the effects, power supply, and a patchbay for routing. But I will need a new round of gigs before I feel inspired to take the plunge!!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

looking good bro!!!

you're really loving that Eternity then huh?!?!!

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

I will post mine, just for contrast:

Re: Me new pedalboard, too!

Thanks, super rad stuff. Now I totally want to make a pedalboard with pedals bike-chain-linked to a replica of "Planky".
