I'm really happy with the SG. Got rid of the bulky grover rotomatics and replaced them with some kluson-type keystone tuners (it doesn't neck dive anymore!!), ditched the tune-o for a roller bridge so I don't have to worry about burrs, and got a nice bunch of creamy hardware. I'm wondering if I should age the pickguard/spacer a bit to match the pickup rings or if I should leave it as is.

I've also got a set of '59s waiting to go into the SG. I got them pretty damn cheap, and I was wondering why they were so inexpensive. Turns out the guy who owned them before me snipped the mounting tabs for a dimarzio triangular shape. He also enlarged the mounting holes and didn't bother threading the new holes. And for the neck pickup, he shortened the legs in addition to the snipping and enlarging. *facepalm* The bridge pup's lead wire also isn't long enough to reach my volume pot.

So I ordered some new baseplates and braided wire which I will use to sorta-restore the '59s. I have a TUSQ nut which I need to put on as well. I also have a Black TUSQ nut for my Ibanez which could use a replacement for the cheap plastic it's got right now.

I already set up the SG to play like butter, but it rings out really nice and clearly, has really long sustain, and sounds great either plugged in or unplugged. I think all these incremental upgrades are really going to turn it from a good guitar into a fantastic guitar.

Re: Meet The Family...

tHATS ONE hAPPY fAPPY fAMILY! They all look totally killer. Diggin' the "Widow" on the white Strat..where can i get one?!!

Re: Meet The Family...

Thanks bro :)

Widow? you talking about the black thing on the top of the headstock?

Re: Meet The Family...

Mm, so nickel baseplate X2N found a home in the Ibanez. I was contemplating snagging an incorrectly advertised nickel base X2N some months ago ($35 BIN) but passed.

How's the trem on it? Or have to decked it?

Re: Meet The Family...

Trem's actually really good. rather like a Wilkinson VS-100, saddles bolt down to the baseplate, two-post fulcrum, and actually there's even a keeper bar for the springs on the back to hold them securely down. Holds tuning very well, even considering the crappy plastic nut.

The X2N, I love it, but I'm sadly thinking of letting it go...With my rig, every time I try to venture into really high gain territory, the whole rig starts squealing like a stuck pig. Doesn't happen with any of my other guitars. I'm actually considering getting a set of actives for the ibanez, or better yet, some low output pickups with a voicing for the heavies. If I get actives, I'm afraid I might just hate perpetually hate myself until I get rid of them.

Also, I emailed Dimarzio support about the baseplate, they said it's chrome-plated brass, not nickel-silver.

That's a pretty bad ass family you've raised there, I'm sure they will mature nicely.

Re: Meet The Family...

Sweet family! I was about to ask if that was a Nokie Edwards in the Ibby, but you covered that.

Re: Meet The Family...

Hey CTN . . . just curious, but how do you have your switches configured? (On the white Strat.) What does what?

Re: Meet The Family...

Thanks again fellas.

Artie, the two mini-toggles are series/parallel switches for each pickup, and the 3-way is just a plain ol' 3-way toggle.
