It's a happy little family here...
I'm really happy with the SG. Got rid of the bulky grover rotomatics and replaced them with some kluson-type keystone tuners (it doesn't neck dive anymore!!), ditched the tune-o for a roller bridge so I don't have to worry about burrs, and got a nice bunch of creamy hardware. I'm wondering if I should age the pickguard/spacer a bit to match the pickup rings or if I should leave it as is.
I've also got a set of '59s waiting to go into the SG. I got them pretty damn cheap, and I was wondering why they were so inexpensive. Turns out the guy who owned them before me snipped the mounting tabs for a dimarzio triangular shape. He also enlarged the mounting holes and didn't bother threading the new holes. And for the neck pickup, he shortened the legs in addition to the snipping and enlarging. *facepalm* The bridge pup's lead wire also isn't long enough to reach my volume pot.
So I ordered some new baseplates and braided wire which I will use to sorta-restore the '59s. I have a TUSQ nut which I need to put on as well. I also have a Black TUSQ nut for my Ibanez which could use a replacement for the cheap plastic it's got right now.
I already set up the SG to play like butter, but it rings out really nice and clearly, has really long sustain, and sounds great either plugged in or unplugged. I think all these incremental upgrades are really going to turn it from a good guitar into a fantastic guitar.
