Mega Ohm Reading

Hi all,

I recently had a pickup I sold come back to me due to no output, and a DCR of over 100M, which I'm completely baffled about. It's intended to be a Strat style neck pickup, circa 6k, and to the best of my knowledge was fine before it was posted out as part of a set, with no apparent damaged to either the pickup, or packaging.

Any ideas on what's likely to be going on?

Re: Mega Ohm Reading

So I'm a car mechanic (in training) and coil windings/magnets are used for certain things like relays, solonoids, the spark system and the starter motor, and my textbook says that if a coil winding is damaged internally it will read with an incredibly high resistance. Was just studying the other day , saw that, and thought of this post. I'd bet there's a break or two in the coil somewhere. 100M does seem ridiculously high, but I guess just a very very weak voltage is getting thru somehow.

I wonder then if the coil has flexed during shipping, broken somewhere as a result, but the wax potting has held the break together enough to allow a struggling signal to thereby register a seemingly massive ohm reading :33:

Re: Mega Ohm Reading

More than likely damage to the pickup in transport. The few times where a pickup has an incredibly high DC resistance and were cheap pickups like stock ones I throw them out as it's not worth examining them compared to others in a potential set. Hopefully it's not too late to phone the postal service if it was an expensive pickup like a fender fat 50 or something along those lines if you declared some form of value on the pickup call them and see what they can do. When I would ship pickguards or guitar bodies half way across the world I would put two layers of cardboard and everything possible to ensure my packages arrive safely.

Re: Mega Ohm Reading

My bet would be your buyer changed the covers and wasn't careful. Did you sell the set with or without covers?

Re: Mega Ohm Reading

Without, though the only issue with covers that has come over over the time I've been making and selling these, was with some Fender ones being a slightly smaller profile.
