mercury trannies

Re: mercury trannies

Im not at all saying that transformers don't matter BUT I do belive that they don't matter as much as people say they do or should I say as much as people want to belive they do. Also, there are many other things that are more important in a good amp than the trannys. On the topic of MM Trannys in general I belive they are part good product and the rest is hype...I belive there are better trannys out there that cost less.

When I made a switch in my old Plexi RI to a vinatge spec OT , the difference was very real. It did not sound bad before, but the difference instantly noticable. The clarity and richness of the amp was greatly improved. I have found in messing with all of my amps, my hands have been in all of em, everything makes a difference. I am astounded at the tonaly differnece in electronic components, damn near like cooking, every thing has a flavor to it. The iron is really the heart of an amp, they all breath differently. I have a buddy with the same Bassman type head as me, his has a replacement OT and mine is stock, the difference is quite dramatic. His is tighter with a more focused crunch and mine is more open, both sound good, but the vibe is altered. I think the differnece is more noticeable when you are in the room playing them live...

I would likely opt for a better price than MM, as there are a lot of good options these days.
