Mercury Transformers??

I was at a music store in Jax a couple days ago.. snagged a brochure for Mercury transformers.. They declare in there that Mercury transformers will definately make your amp sound MUCH better.. Any fact to this??

Im assuming advertising hype. My Splawn has a Heyboer (sp?) in it IIRC and I feel pretty certain that Scott probably tried everything to find what he felt was best.. But Im wondering for some of the mass produced amps.

Fact or fiction??

I've only done the Mercury Magnetics.

I'd say any Mercury, Merren Audio, Marstran, Heyboer... would do a good job versus stock (unless the stock is vintage).

Re: Mercury Transformers??

mercury makes great transformers, so do plenty of others. if you have a good quality tranny then i wouldnt think its worth swapping out. if you have cheap trannys then im sure there is a noticeable improvement

You have been around this place for how long, but you still need validation to cross the street?

Give the guy a break. Have you seen my Christmas thread in the Sound Room?

YES... AND some one to hold my johnson when I wizz... Never changed a tranny. speakers yes... wondering if or how much improvement it would make on my classic 30..

Re: Mercury Transformers??

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't consider changing a PT, seriously, unless I had one burn out.

I've wondered about that too. I can see how an output tranny could improve sound, but not a PT. Unless, of course, it was inadequate to meet the power needs of the circuit.

Oops. I meant "OT".

Re: Mercury Transformers??

When I had my JMP clone worked on last year, we tested the Mercury Magnetics vs a vintage Marshall unit and I preferred the MM. Not inexpensive, though.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

True! I am still pondering the idea of a speaker change.. I changed the stock speaker to an Emi Private Jack. (this was my first ever speaker swap) In many ways, the Private Jack was a HUGE improvement. Mainly, the stock speaker, when hitting a chord hard would make like a thud before the chord rang out.. the New one does not. however, the new speaker is much darker sounding..

Re: Mercury Transformers??

MM offers great products, but changing out a Heyboer would be a lateral move at best. Scott knows what he is doing.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

Mercury Marketing is what you pay.
I bought an OT from them for $300.
Then i found i could have had a Merren, Marstran or Heyboer for alot less.
I like Mercury's heavy duty copper power cord tho they're under $20 bucks.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

I think probably Marsten and definitely Heyboar is much better than Mercury Magnetics , cause I've done significant of research- looking for a good output Transformer for my Tweed Twin clone. Not all companies make every model of transformer, so you might have to settle. Heybaor is the best from what limited knwoledge I have of the subject..

If it were blown, sure look at getting a replacement. OEM replacements are about $50, but buying a $300 transformer for a $600 amp seems kinda silly.
