Merry xmas to me :0

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

It should arrive Friday, I'll see how it is then. Funny the neck isn't a P90?? I see that Gibson describes the pickups as a single coil and a P90. I saw a guy in a blues band playing this same guitar two days ago and he was actually getting some smokin SRV tone out of the neck (playing an SRV cover no less).

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

The neck is called an Alnico, a P-90 in principle justa bit different layout. They are wonderful pickups.

Good luck TC that is a beautiful guitar, beautiful. Might not have much in the way of frets. Most are shipped as fretless wonders.

Wow...puuurrrtyyy...Congrats!

I remember vividly the day I bought my black custom....Chuck Levins in Maryland. It was my first time at a really good music store and my first Les Paul..circa 1987. I didn't know what Les Paul I wanted, just knew I wanted a Les Paul. The guy just kept bringing up Les Pauls from the basement..Deluxes, Goldtops, CopperTops..this gorgeous Wine standard that I almost bought..'til he brought up the Black Custom...

Tangent... Chuck Levins rocks. When I bought my Reed there, the sales-guy brought me downstairs via elevator to the "secret" basement area, and let me go through every friggin Reed in the place to find what I wanted.

TattooedCarrot, Gibsons and impulse shopping.....what do they all have in common? Discuss amongst yourselves!

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

thats just like craig ross' cept his is the real deal. That guitar is the ONLY p-90 guitar that sets me off. I LOVE that guitar!!!!!!

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

Hey Tattooed is this a Custom Shop and not a RI? As far as my limited knowledge goes, I thought the ABR and stoptail piece did not appear until 1955 or perhaps 56. I know the Custom Shop does a JB 54 Oxblood with a Jr/Special bridge and uses humbuckers and this is not a model that was never a production model back in the day.

I am not a fan of Customs and black guitars per se, but that is one beautiful guitar and I hope it has real P-90s in it. Enjoy it and congrats on the deal; hope it plays as good as it looks.

Also, I wanted to ask if you still have the black 2002 or 2003 Standard you got about 2 months ago? How does it play, does it have the Burstbucker Pros and do you like the pickups? I was looking at that one when I got an 89 Darkburst Standard that a friend of mine needed to sell.

It's a historic 54RI made in the custom shop (as are all reissues). I don't know about the acuracy of the bridge or other specs, but Gibson says the 54 custom was the first to use the ABR-1 bridge. Here's the link to it on Gibson's custom shop website.

I bought it used, it already had the burstbuckers removed. I then added a Custom/Pearly Gates combo, chrome Sperzels, LP custom knobs, chrome rings, and changed the apprerance to more of a hot rod. Here's how it looks now.

I'm sorry, there's just no guitar like a Black Custom! The necks are what I like to refer to as "silly good." :smoker: I love my BB Custom, but it's such a work of art, I'm almost afraid to use it and tarnish the gold or cloud the black finish. I'd love to have yours and call it a matching Black Historic Custom set.

The binding looks white here, but it's yellowed. Also, mine has the unusuall Kluson tuners, which is rare for Customs.

Are the current production Customs still made with small/low-profile frets? I thought that was a thing of the past. Anyone?

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

Jeez, TC, you are a true guitar sniper! What a score!

Kinda makes me wish I still had my Gibson LP Custom... :)

Re: Merry xmas to me :0

Very nice. My local shop had a 70s reissue of that same guitar come through for about US$3500...
