Mesa Boogie F series ??

I tried a F100 today it was 60/100 watts. Nice clean and great distortion. What do you think?

For Clapton and BB King with my Strats and Hamer

Thanks

Lou

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

It would be too heavy and too loud for what you want. I would say go for the F50 which is a lot better and that clean channel is nice and sweet. It excels with Strats, Hamers, PRS and even Gibbys. I wanted one some time ago but had to settle for the Nomad which is a little more versatile but the F50 goes back to what MB did best in the MK1 and Mk2 versions. You could also go for the F30 which is a smaller version but I think the F50 will be the better one.

Lou....did you never get your other amp working properly????? I have overall not been a fan of the Mesa amps, I would think for your style and preferences there are other amps that you would love, if you're thinking about spending close to a grand. For that price, you can almost get your dream amp if you shop hard enough.

I just haven't had great experience with Mesa's, and to me the sound is more modern...and you're all about vintage. YMMV, and my opinion may be worthless.

I haven't settled on it Just kinda screwing with my own head. I just was in a shop that stocked Mesa.

I sent my Peavey off to a guy who gave it the once over and did some mod's. He hangs out at the Hamer forum They all swear buy him. It is awesome I never would used the boost or distortion channel but now WOW it sounds great and with that cab I got I can't wait for you to come down and try it.

I nead another piece of equipment like I need another EXWIFE!! :smack:

Just looking to spend more of what I don't have.

Thinking about something to ease the pain of my senior citizen status on the 18th :smack: IF I wasn't the Holy roller I could fix that easy BIG Bottle of Jack and a........... what am I saying :newangel: :smack:

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

If ur considering it I think ud shud try the F50 or F30, 100 watts is too much i reckon. But thats cause i like cranking small amps to get a nice sound.
I thought they were more modern sounding amps and do the nu metal thing well i think u shud look at some other ones first more vintage maybe, anyway what the hek. :smack:

Lou, I have the F50 and it is a very good amp so good that I traded a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and a Boogie DC-3 for it. The cleans are very Fenderlike and the distortion is close to a Rect. It is a very versatile amp, The only thing is that its very loud (yeah) and a little bright which I'll try to tame wit some JJ tubes.
If you are just gonna do the home thing the F-30 should be plenty loud except it has EL84's which don't sound as Fendery to me
Take care

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

here's a review i jut posted regarding the f series i tried this weekend
i really wanted to like it
but i think i like the dc 30 or 50 much much better
but that's just me, my musical taste, and my crappy untrained ears
"Did some amp research yesterday
initial disclaimer: my ears arent' the calibrated instruments of tone research that i'd like them to be; but here goes nothing

Played a DC-50 (which was overpriced)
i've been told they go for 500-600 used, but htis one was 1000 and that's pretty much what i've seen (the DC30s i've seen for 500-600
anwyays - this amp was perfect for me
clean channel: round, full, present and perfect
dirty channel: nice and marshally (ikknow i know) nice break up and could go from a little dirt to really nasty
countor channel: sounded very modern and perfect for harder music - i don't play metal, but i do like a nice loud kickin distortion
singing overdrive was found here, but more so on teh clean channel
this will be the amp i get, or a DC-30

played a f-50
1) too loud for me and I couldn't get a decent tone at a low volume
clean channel - al right, but nothign special
dirty channel - good for blues, but not really dirty enough at low volumes for home use
contour channel - got nasty, but the entire amp never really felt present
some tube amps feel like they're in your face pushing music at you
these felt like there were far away out to sea
(now i'm rambling)

played a f-30
i like this one better than the f-50
but similar results
clean - pretty good, but a bit lifeless
dirty - didn't really do it for me
but hte countor chanenl here was a lot better - probably becasue i coudl turn the amp up a little more

played a tranyor ycv 40 (or whatever the letters are)
clean channel - fantastic - prob the best i've played - very similar to the dc50 - very round and complex and full of life - very very nice
dirty - nice - but too vintage for my tastes/style
boost - didn't really get to kick it in much because it was a small guitar shop and hte owner was lookin at me funny - i think he wanted to go home
i'll be back again soon for another run

i hope any of this helped
again - i'm not much of a refined listener - but i know what i like and i know when i hear it

cheers"

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

hmm im thinking about trying out the f series as well, im not sure i am thinking about going with the f100 mainly because it of the 60 watt feature so it will be able to play with bigger amps as a 30 watt amp might not be enough power to compete with say a half stack. with a 2 x 12 100 watt amp i could at least be heard or to the least 50, how much was the F100 selling for lou?

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

I'm a Boogie devotee from way back, and I would encourage all to remember that their amps are at a real disadvantage until played loud, and then they shine. If your looking for an amp that you can play at low volumes, Boogie doesn't make it, IMO.

They F 100 was 1350.00 it was very cool. They sales guy/mgr gave me a demo. The store was empty he went from 60-100 and then hit the contour switch it just kept getting bigger and better great clean and distortion. I would have to move out of my appartment to a house with no neighbors

Re: Mesa Boogie F series ??

Hey Lou....in your search, if you stumble upon a Mesa Boogie Blue Angel, I would HIGHLY recommend it!

I have the 4x10 version, but it comes in a head version too. 2 6V6s @ 15watts. 4 EL84s @ 30 watts, or a combination of the 2 @ 38watts.

Very very sweet blues amp & the reverb is absolutely amazing.

As for the comment you made about looking for Mesa amps online "to keep the store honest", I don't think Mesa discounts anywhere, unless it's an item going out of stock & not being continued. (Although I got my Mesa Bottle Rocket pedal 1/2 price from MARS when they went out of business).

Just keep saving for when the "right" one comes along & in the mean time, play as many as you can find to give you a better idea of what you're looking for.

I have no experience with the F series, but I wouldn't go any higher than a 50watter. That is PLENTY loud!!!!
