Mesa Royal Atlantic

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

Oh man, MAJOR GAS! It's a sick amp for sure. The sound is absolutely incredible. It's more open sounding and more versatile than the Electra-Dyne. It's kind of like the Transatlantic (TA-15/30) on steroids. The amp sounds incredible at any volume. I had the pleasure of spending a couple of hours one a Royal Atlantic and a 2x12. I used to think the Roadster was such a great amp, and I still do, but I'm partial to the Royal Atlantic. One thing that I still love about the Roadster is the British mode. The Royal Atlantic has a similar sound, overall, to that mode. It's a damned shame that GC is leaving Mesa Boogie behind because it will probably result in higher prices. At least they can be had cheap for now since they're all on closeout pricing.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

I've always been curious about the Royal and Trans-Atlantic amps. I have always assumed that they were going for more of an open Marshall growl. Is this correct? If so, how close do they come? I know that Justin Hawkins from The Darkness has used Mesas on his recordings (Dual Rectifiers I think?) and they sound big, thick, and bouncy like old plexis the way he's got them dialed-in. So I have no doubt that Randall is capable of designing amps that CAN capture that Marshall sound. But you just don't usually associate Mesas with that tone.

My local dealer has an Engl Retro 100 head that I know is aimed at getting that Marshall sound. And though I like it... it just doesn't have that certain something (kerrang!) that my 2203 has. So I've always been curious as to how close Mesa gets to that tone.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

They cover a good bit of ground.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

Sorry if this is thread-jacking, but just curious as to what the differences are between an attenuator such as the one built on this amp and wattage controls found on most other amps?

What a horrible vid to review that amp...turn up the gain all the way, just use two or three low strings, pick as fast as you can, make everything sound the same. Just about any amp (some may need a dist pedal) can do that.

The Royal-Atlantic actually sounds about 1000x better than that! The last 10 or 15 seconds of the vid is the only part worth watching.

Too each his own, bro.

I've heard lots of older players trash talk modern metal. But, every time I try to get them to play it, they can't.

So, if the modern metal guys CAN play the older styles, and the older guys CAN'T play the modern styles. Doesn't that make us better?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but you are the one who started the trash talk first. I'm just defending it.

It's not a review, it's a demo of the way one person uses it. You never struck me as a dumb person, but that post was pretty moronic.

For the music Lamb of God plays, it sounds pretty damn good.

Totally man. I've actually been learning a lot of Lamb of God lately. As a guitarist that started out playing rock and blues (I'm even starting a 70's cover band with my bassist and some other musicians) but currently plays in a doom metal outfit, I wanted to get my chops up to that level, or as close as I can get. And it worked - I'm way better now than I was a month ago. My endurance is way up, and both of my hands are much more precise. The biggest benefactors of the practice are my pinky (apparently Willie has a ridiculously long pinky and can do crazy stretches that hurt the average guitarist. I can confirm, my hand hurts even when I'm not playing LOL) and my right hand.

And yeah, I think that the people that can play the old stuff and new stuff are better. Guitardoc, if you can play the riffs in this video (any of them, they start at 2:10) then I will hail you as El Supremo de SDUGF for all eternity. Otherwise, you were just being an asshat old man who can't stand new music. Because the world doesn't have enough of those.

I don't think it was judgement of the player or his talent level, simply that it really didn't do much to showcase the ability of the amp. Add in the youtube compression and it was a pretty unimpressive video as far as showcasing the amp itself. I can't see anyone listening to the playing on that video and saying "I have to have that amp". especially at Mesa pricing. Even for that style of music, I didn't think the tones represented in the video were all that great, though I'm sure it sounded a lot better in the room.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

I agree with Doc and chadd. The dude can play, but as far as showing what the amp can do, it is the end of the vid that really shows you the dynamics that this amp has. Bill, have you checked out Apple Music? They are a Mesa dealer. If they don't have one in stock they would probably be willing to bring one in for you to try. They did that for for me with a Mark V. Joel was very helpful.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

When I posted the video, I was just trying to show that the amp could be used for a few things. The two initial responses talked about the open marshall growl. I was simply trying to show that the amp could go in several directions. That is all.

The OP, was looking for information on a specific piece of gear. I was just trying to help, and show another side of the amps capabilities.

Like I said before. I didn't start the trash talk. And how did that help the OP, at all.

I have not shopped at Apple Music since 2003. They screwed me on a $95 drum machine deal, would not accept a return on a defective unit or even give me a store credit. They also carry G&L, another of my favorite brands. But I simply will not shop there anymore. I've since done about $45K in business with Guitar Center since then, and they have always treated me right.

I won't send anyone to Apple. I guess hanging on to that $95 was more important than the $45, 000.00

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

Thanks for all of your comments. BTW the vid is helpful, even though I don't play that style of music...I'm more of a classic rock and blues guy. I hve Mark IIIs, a IV, and now a V, but I occasionally want more of a British tone. The RA100 is interesting because of the attenuators might be helpful in a club situation. I'm also considering a Stiletto, or a Marshall...like the TSL or the Vintage Modern. But I love Mesa tone and quality.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

I've got a Mark V and have been curios about what it would sound like with EL34s.

Re: Mesa Royal Atlantic

Watch the Intronaut vids from EMG TV to hear how awesome these heads are, they do a dub jam on there that shows how versatile these heads are.....
