Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

PM anewdefguitarist...he has one and his live sound is excellent. He can fill you in on all of the ups and downs (if there are any).

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

there is one at GC and I'm thinking about picking it up for $900.

is that brand new? if its used, talk them down to the minimum (there's a min set when the used item is purchased).

I had the Rectoverb version and liked it a lot (sold it to buy a Stiletto Ace and I wish I had both amps).

I like them with EL34 tubes for sure. they get pretty heavy but have a little more brightness and cut than a Dual Rec. very cool sound.

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

thanks for your help. i just got back from trying it and it sounds frreakin awesome......i am thinking about off-loading my vintage modern to pay........i can't afford two amps, unfortunately

I'd play a Single Rec over a Vintage Modern for sure. they won't cover the same territory, but an SR with EL34 tubes swapped in has a nice midrange punch.

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

yea - i put the VM up on the bay already and posted a feeler in the trading post....i guess now i'll just wait.

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

I own a Series 2 Mesa Single Rec, and I love it. Swapped out the 6L6s for EL-34s, and it made a big difference. It's a surprisingly versatile amp. I play it into a Mesa 2x12 horizontal cab with V30s.

Mesa owners . . .

. . . what is the diff's between the Rectoverb, Single Recto and Dual Recto, except for the amount of rectifier tubes ?

Thanks
James

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

well, i do love the VM but i need something a little more modern.......maybe want is a better word :-)
i just called GC and they're going to call me back with a bottom dollar price on it. we'll see what they say - they are somewhat reluctant to move on some items. it's kind of weird, some days you walk out of there saying "now how did I get that deal?" - other days you walk out having paid full price......depending on what they say, i'll be lowering the auction cost on the VM to match their bottom dollar

If I'm not mistaken, the short version is that the Rect-O-Verb is a Single Rectifier with reverb, and the Dual Rectifier is a Single Rectifier with an additional gain stage.

Love,

Keith

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

I thought it was:

Rect-o-verb = single rec with reverb 50w
dual recto = single rec with two rectifier tubes (can switch between tube or solid state) and 100w
triple recto = same as dual recto but with 150w

So does that mean that the Dual Recto has more gain than the Rectoverb then ?

Thanx guys !
I take it they are voiced the same, reguardless of the wattage, right ?

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

I thought that the only differences was the watts, and that the extra recto tubes were just there to handle the extra wattage...

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

the DR sounds a little fatter because you have the extra watts to push the low frequencies but the preamps on the Single and Dual are nearly identical. the DR can sound a little heavier when you're playing using higher gain, especially drop-tuning, but it's not night and day. both amps have the unmistakable Rectifier tone.

The Single Rec and Rectoverb are the same amp with the exception that the RV has a solid state reverb circuit worked in. the tones between the SR and RV are 99% the same - the addition of reverb doesn't really color the tone in that particular circuit design.

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

I've been wanting a Single Rec to use with my 800 marshall for a while... kinda want a mini 50 watt version of a mesa/marshall setup! Both would go through Earcandy cabs! Fun smallish versitile rig!

I thought it was something like that the main difference is betweeen the single red and the other two. Also I think before triple rectifiers there were dual channel dual recs not sure. But small changes can affect tone.

Thank you for the explanation !
So if someone is gonna play (all the time) in low tunings, say C-standard, it is 'better' to get the Dual Rec, to "help" those low end notes ?

yeah - personally, I would lean towards a Dual Rec if I was playing really heavy stuff in drop tunings all the time. I prefer the earlier 2-channel DRs but I think that the current/recent 3 channel models can still sound good.

Re: Mesa Single Rectifier 50 head - opinions?

Single Rectifier
- 50 watts (2 6L6)
- 2 channels
- diode (solid state) rectifier

Rect-o-verb:
- same as above, but with reverb

Dual Rectifier
- 100 watts (4 6L6)
- three channels
- selectable diode or tube (2 5U4) rectifiers

Triple Rectifier
- 150 watts (6 6L6)
- three channels
- selectable diode or tube (3 5U4) rectifiers

They are all voiced very similarly (especially the dual and triple), but they are by no means clones of each other with different power ratings.

All Rectifier amps can run either 6L6 or EL34 power tubes. There's a bias switch on the back.
