Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

50 tube watts with two power tubes is PLENTY of power, and will be MUCH too loud to crank in your room! I have a 30 watt Marshall tube, and that's too loud to play above level 5. If you set your settings right and play with the right feel, you should be able to sound like most players you want to sound like, including Metallica. A lot of their sound is from scooped mids and EMGs.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I got my rectoverb on ebay for $840 shipped. I would look for one of those. Same amp plus reverb and classier looking IMO. As far as being loud enough for bedroom practice, it is way too loud for just the bedroom. I have a weber mass for when I use it in the house. You could play any gig with the rectoverb. If the venue is really large your gonna put it through the pa anyway.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I have a Single Rectifiier halfstack in my bedroom and at 50 watts it is MORE than enough. Metallica sound, no problem. You should be able to get one for $800. used. Very important: stay away from the Series 1 and get the Series 2. They made significant changes to the series 2 that gives you another mode option in channel 2 and a better clean in channel 1.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

+1 to everything that's been said. i have a series 2 single recto, and it can nail pretty much any tone i want to dial into it. and many people think "eeeehh, it's only 50 watts" but it is a LOUD 50 watts. i've played some pretty big shows with it, mic'd and un-mic'd, and in both situations it has gotten the job done and then some.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

People don't realize that for tube-driven amps, 50 watts is an incredible amount of power. In terms of volume, each tube watt equals about 2 1/2 solid-state watts. So a 50-watt tube amp is going to be as loud as a 150-watt solid-state amp.

Truth.

The volume is even bigger if you use a large cabinet like a 4x12 with it. Trust me, if you push a half-stack with that head you will be able to drown out a loud drummer at close range.

A lot of experienced players prefer lower-wattage heads because it's easier to achieve a natural-sounding power-stage distortion. I used a 60-watt Marshall for a long time in a band with 2 guitarists and was always the louder of the two.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I've seen Series I floor models go for just under $1000. The Series II will cost ya $1099.

I picked one of those up a couple years back and it's never let me down. Definetely does the Black Album tone with ease. Just be patient with those dials - you will get it! I also recommend getting a nice little layered OD to take off some of the dryness of the amp.

Best part about the amp - it sounds GREAT at low volumes, and BETTER at higher volumes. Bedroom volume friendly. Definetely. Win/Win? I think so.

am i gonna be able to get the half stack for $800 to $1000 or just the head ????

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I got my Rectoverb head for $750 shipped in immaculate condition. I prefer the way the Series I amps sound though, just my preference, and the 4 modes gives me plenty of versatility.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I also have a Single Rect. Mines a series I... honestly i liked the tone better on the series 1 than the 2, but the differences in sound are tiny.

I use and love the "vintage" mode on the overdrive channel, thickens things up and rolls off the rough edges. Very cool. But something tells me the "Modern" mode may suit you better.

The series 2 rect. has 3 modes on its overdrive channel opposed to 2 on the series 1. (Although, i didn't like the added mode ("Raw") too much anyway.)

The series 2 also has a bias switch that allows you to swap between 6l6's and EL34's.

Get out there...try both series' and go by the way YOU think they sound.

BTW i payed $850 used for the head a year ago. You should be able to score one for $800 if you look hard enough.

To me, the "raw" mode on Channel 2 sounds very similar to "pushed" mode on channel 1 once you get the gain up into the last 1/4 of the knob or so. If I personally need more gain than what pushed gets me, Vintage on channel 2 is probably where I want to be anyways. I would like to experiment with EL34 tubes sometime, but hey I could always pick up another amp ;).

That's the going rate for the head (used). The 4x12 recto cab will run about another $500-$700 used.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

I have a dissenting view on tone quality at low volumes. I love my Rectoverb, but I think that it sounds pretty lame unless it's cranked a bit. To my ears, the amp just doesn't sing unless the power tubes are being pushed at least a little bit.

As far as Series I vs. Series II, I think that the clean channel is much improved in the Series II. It's much warmer with more definition and clarity in the highs. In other words, more sparkle. It's really delicious with a strat in either of the notch positions.

This stuff is so subjective, you really need to hear one against the other to make the judgement for yourself.

Re: Mesa single rectifier !!!!!!

Retail I've seen Single Rectos at about 1100. Actually I've played duel, triple, and singles, and the single is my favorite. And loud enough? At 50 watts the only thing you couldn't do is a full stadium un-miked. =P. Believe me, that thing is LOUD.

I agree. I've found that if I absolutely have to turn down, it really sounds best when the preamp volumes are turned way way low (9 o'clock or below, just above silence really), and you use the master to adjust the volume. 11 or 12 o'clock seems to be a reasonable volume when the pres are down. Preamp only gain really isn't that nice, gotta push the power tubes.
