I have one and really like it.
It takes some dialing, depending on your amp. I use mine through my JCM 800 for metal and heavier music. Actually sounds pretty good but it took me a while to get some fizziness out of the tone.
IMO, it doesn't 100% nail the Mesa tone (because the rest of the amp itself has something to do with it too) but it definitely gets close if you dial it right. Sounds nice and has way more gain than what I could ever want (and doesn't sound that good with the gain maxed out but so do rectos IMO).
If you can get it at a good price I think they're a nice investment. I got mine for 225$ canadian in a flea market and, judging by the current going rates on eBay, I got a great deal.

First off, the SFX-03 has 2 channels, the Mesa has shared tone controls & 3 different selectble gain levels.

similar idea. two foot switchable sounds, tube driven overdrive pedal, shared controls remote switching jacks, headphone/recording out jack, preamp to power amp jack and pedal to guitar amp jack
the clean is kinda spanky, the blues is medium gain and the solo is more mark series than dual rec.

I dunno why but I was under the impression that the SFX had less gain (overall) than the V-twin... are their tones that comparable?

They are very differently creatures. The V-Twin is more gritty in my opinion. The V has more gain. It is voiced very differently. TT (03) has a smoother vibe to it. I like them both, but currenlty just own the TT. The V would have to be the right price to make me bite.

It's somewhere between a Recto and a Mark series
I have recorded with them. They have a gorgeous but modern dirty blues sound, a very nice saturated lead sound, and the most chimey rich clean EVER!
It sounds amazing with a power amp, but can sound nice into the board. I am not as much into the V Twin / Mesa sound for crunch rhythms. The Dirty blues sound is good for crunch rhythm on the low gain sound for full chords. It's got that Mesa mid thing. You can get some good results into clean / single channel amps.
Interesting side not, trying a low gain preamp tubes (12AT7) in the V1 slot (or was it V2???) can get some nice, clearer, results.
The downside? You can't use all 3 channels at any time, you can only access 2 at a time - trust me you will yearn for all 3. Worst downside? You can't control the volume jump that occurs in the high gain boost channel.
