Messed up with a pickup: can in be saved?

Re: Messed up with a pickup: can in be saved?

Well, the whole thing is submerged in wax, and you tend to find a lot more wax in covered pickups. However, I am not sure how much harmonic content is lost- you do gain touch-sensitivity with an unpotted pickup, which is great for cleaner styles where you wouldn't use so much volume and preamp gain.

I remember an experiment made by the Wolfetone guy who essentially proved that the harmonic complexity of an unpotted pickup gets reduced by potting it. Not sure if anything can be actually heard tho.

Here's the thing

So by removing all the wax I've actually ****ed the pickup a lil more, nice to know :lmao:

Not at all. The wax is supposed to hold and cover the wire inside the coil. Wax you actually see and can remove without unwinding the pickup is meaningless excess left from the process.

Ok great to know, thanks.

Another question: I asked to some pickup builders here and there about bar magnets, and how much would cost purchasing from them a couple of bars.
They all said about 15-20 €.
Honestly I felt surprised, on ebay and various sites you can find alnico bars for pretty cheap, around 5-6€, so one of them told me cheap stuff sucks, andfor a good pickup you must get a "good" magnet.

Now, I'm no expert on this matter, but as long as the bar generates a magnetic field strong enough it should be fine right? What could be the problem?

Re: Messed up with a pickup: can in be saved?

I don't think I've ever paid more than $6 (with shipping) for a magnet.

Re: Messed up with a pickup: can in be saved?

OK the magnet arrived,I've made the swap but apparently the pickups is still not working properly. So two possible reasons:

1)some wire coming out of the coil has broken, and I'll try somehow to fix it.Keeping it simple at first, I wont consider the coilsplit thing, just shorten (as much as possible) the cables coming out of each coils and solder them to a new one following this

2) There's no contact solution between the magner and the poles like Devastone said...which is weird cause there's not much space to move the magnet down there ...but still...

I'll try to find some time to see if things can get solved, or else swap the whole pickup for good.
