Metal Picks?

Re: Metal Picks?

I tried them an they just sounded funny to me. Maybe because I am used to nylon picks.

Re: Metal Picks?

I used Hot Licks copper picks for most of the 80s. They last forever and are great for pick rakes. :headbang: The have a very distinctive pick attack that you may or may not like. Curiously enough, as they oxidize, they get just a bit tacky and are easier to grip.

If you like the pick attack, the one downside is they scratched the $#!t out of the top of my guitars. I now play Butterfly picks. Not as kewl as metal picks but I really like the way they feel and sound.

Re: Metal Picks?

I thought they were bright an metallic. I couldnt think of the right words to describe it in my last reply.

Re: Metal Picks?

they strip the wrap off your wound strings. you get metal shavings all over your guitars. they got a sick sound for pick slides though :D

Re: Metal Picks?

I bought a brass one on a whim and its very entertaining to play with. Mainly it brings out a sort of ringing high end and makes the treble very crisp. Plus you can hear just a little scrape of metal on metal a millisecond before you hit notes. Sounds great with a lightly distorted amp! It's a good thing to play with if you need a little snarl to the notes.

Re: Metal Picks?

I just saw on ebay a guy who is making picks out of old (pre 64') quarters. Solid nickel. Looks pretty intersting. $10 for 3 I think. I may try some for entertainment value.

Re: Metal Picks?

ive used a jim dunlop metallic thumb pick. its pretty cool and when i play slide guitar stuff in open tunings it works out well, especially in songs where theres heavy strumming and then finger picking in the same lick.

Re: Metal Picks?

I use brass fingerpicks and a plastic thumpick to play the dobro. Made a flatpick out of a nickle and used it for a while, just beat it down with a hammer and an anvil and file it to whatever shape you want. Worked really well for pinch harmonics but I didn't care for it overall.

Re: Metal Picks?

I used them for awhile, but they sometimes would slice right through my strings. Rather embarrassing when that happens....

Re: Metal Picks?

Metal picks look interesting.... but like 3 cent hero said... they must shave your strings or at least wear them down faster

I remember using those for a while as well. The pickguard on my strat was pretty beat after using them for a while. Quite a different feel and took a while to get used to them.

Re: Metal Picks?

I hated them. One of my friends always uses a metal one. It wears off on your hand and the bright/metallic type tone it adds to the mix doesn't work at all. I would imagine that it wears away strings much quicker as well.

Go ultex and don't look back ;)

Re: Metal Picks?

My guess is (Tho I have never used them) is that they proabably give you an active p-up sound without the active p-up. Frankly I have heard active pickups played and personally think they are an abomination to all guitardom. So, I would say if you dont like an Active p-up sound don't use em.

I use those, I find them a tad brighter than gator grips but also more crisp so I won't look back ;)
I highly reccomennd these too.

Re: Metal Picks?

used em.. when i saw what it's doing to my finish, dropped them faster than a hot potato.
if you want that HARD attack, use fender ultra heavies. 1.3mm. used it for 3 years without any noticeable weardown, then turned into a necklace and then lost if.. color, shell pink :D the manly color.. but no, i wouldnt use those alu pick again. ever. i was a notoriously hard picker before i learned that a soft attack can allow me to play faster and i broke strings even with .73 nylon picks.
