metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

SABOTAGE

New member
for the last few days now i have went to band practice with a different pup each time to find what one i like the best for playing styles from slayer to lamb of god to mushugah :saeek:
here are the contestants,
DD
lawrence 500XL
emg 81
dimarzio super distortion
dimarzio EVO

amps used were a mesa MK-IV head wirhg 5 band eq and a 4x12 mesa cab and a 2203 JCM 800 with matching cab with a rocktron replifex for some chorus.

after taping all the tunes with the different pups the duncan distortion sounded the best overall and was the clear winner.
it had the best growl, snarl, and bark /presence of the group
second place goes to the 81
:)

Is anyone surprised??!! :)

some may be?
:laugh2:

i find the duncan stuff to just have a edge the others dont have?
there is something in the tone and feel of his pups that seperates his pups from the others?
i guess it is seymour MOJO or something?
did he sell his soul? :laugh2:

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

it's the mojo man... it's the mojo of honesty, soul and work invested into the pups

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

i love the dd, but how did it beat the emg 81 in a metal contest. I like the dd for 80s metal but i always thought the 81 would be the winner in a "modern" metal contest

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

WOW! I am soo suprised the DD would win on the Seymour Duncan forum!

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

Same guitar......? Give us a little more detail. In fact which one excelled on certain songs. I can't see the DD pulling of a Pinch Harmonic pound for pound better than a 81, or an 85 for that matter. I have tried neither.

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

yeah, what woods are we talkin' here?, What tuning?

And, no I'm not surprised. Kinda wish you would have tried the Invader as well, I'll have to do some experimenting of my own.
Rock On. :smoker:

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

I have a DD, emg 81/85, and a BL L500XL. The BL was my winner, but they are all great pickups and it mostly comes down to preference and woods used to pick a winner.

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

I can get by with a JB, Distortion, EMG 81, EMG 85 or Invader. In my one pickup guitars, I prefer the Invader. In the 2-hum guitars, my favorite is the 81b/85n combo.

well if you are into the tone of LAMB of GOD's ashes of the wake
the DD nails that better.
the DD just sounded more organic and RAW than the 81 did!

the comparisons were done with the same axe,
alder esp M-II deluxe with a floyd set to dive only(more low end and sustain this way) through a mesa MK-IV and a marshall 2203 JCM 800 RI.
as far as PINCH harmonics do not underestimate the mighty DD for that.
it excels with them as good as the 81 does and keep in mind i set the DD very close to the strings and pinch harmonics are zakk like :laugh2:

yeah i really just meant for me the DD was the winner.
that does not mean that you are someone else would pick it as thier fav.
for me and my rig it was the clear winner for what i want in my tone :32:

You said you recorded them? Wanna post clips?
I recorded BAND PRACTICE with all of them.
each time i went to practice i had a different pup in the axe
and recorded all the sessions.

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

And you based your ultimate conclusions based on listeing back to the recordings of those practice sessions, right?

I say again, then, wanna post clips?

dude, you are confusing the hell out of me?
post clips for what??????
i already decided the duncan sounded the best for me? what you think i would change my mind if i post clips and someone goes "i think the 81 sounded best" or
"i prefered the lawrence"

:laugh2:

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

I'm not trying to change your mind. I just thought it would be interesting for other people to hear the recordings of the pickups side by side the way you did.

Re: metal toned pup shootout, DUNCAN DD WINS!

Im in a quandary what to buy! I can get some screaming sounds from my stock 498T!! I don't know how much better it can get which makes me excited when I do put my own stamp on my Les Paul. Im thinking the BL 500XL, the Dimebucker, DD, CC, and JB in the running. I don't like scooped sounds though.

Have you guys downloaded that chart on this site? With the EQs? This is the only really thing I can go by. Here it is if you don't have it.

http://www.seymourduncan.com/website/images/tonechart.pdf

The CC looks awesome......I don't know about the Bass though. 3/7/7
Is that gonna chugg at all. And is the output more then the 498T.

Also how would you EQ the BL 500XL... From Bill Lawrence.com LOL

Three words for you in 2005!!! Thine Eyes Bleed! You heard me rave about them here!
ha ha.
