ok guys, help me out here... I'm CRAZY about Metallica's tone from AJFA, and I'd really like to know what Hammett and Hetfield used.... here's what I know
Hetfield: ESP "EET FUK" Explorer, EMG 81/60 combo
Marshall amp of some sort??

Hammett: ESP... some strat copy with 3 (stock??) single coils, POSSIBLY a guitar with EMG 81's but I dont think so...
Also an unidentified Marshall amp...

so what were the amps they used, were there any effects, and what guitar/pup setup did Hammett have??

thanks in advance for helping out a tone freak :laugh2: :32:

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

I actually thought they had switched to Mesa by then....but thats just what i think i can remember from my sketchy memory.

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

I always thought the MESA MkIIC+ was repsonsible for the crunch tones on that album?

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

solos were done on James' modded Marshall. called THE Marshall by hammett

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

Mark IIC+ Wired as a preamp, through a 100 watt Marshall EL34 power amp. I believe they had EMG's then, but if not, I find a DD nails it damn good!

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

I know for a fact Kirk did use the ADA MP-1 with the ADA MQ-1 for his leads. The MP-1 was set on low/medium gain andwas pushed with a Tube Screamer for rythem and leads.

IIRC (from a Guitar World Interview during the recording of the Black album) Kirk´s axe was an old Charvel neck, with a Fernandes Body, Original Floyd, and EMG SA Single coils.

FWIW

On a related note... I was watching both the S&M and the Cunning Stunts DVD's and while the guitar tones are great I can't see any visible amplification! No amps, stacks, or racks are clearly visible... are the amps isolated under the stage and then pumped through the mains and monitors or what?

Yep, that Metallica info site is great! Gotta check it out sometime when I'm not as busy.

the ADA MP-1 is a tube preamp that is powered by 2 12ax7s. It produces tube distortion, cleans and has chorus.

If you want to check pics and info for it, check www.adadepot.com

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

Marshall was a heavily moded one, GJ knows the model.

I know on the black album they used IIC+'s and MkIV's.

Re: Metallica gear from AJFA

If you mean heavy effeects as in they somthered their tone with effects like eqs and different pre-amps and such then not always... on the later albums like Metallica they started to get into using lots of effects but the albums load and re-load is where they really put on the effects.. Im not so sure about St.anger because they were going for the Rawness of Kill 'em all...

And 3 cent heroes .. I'm pretty sure that kirk and james used the same modded marshall for all the songs on Kill'em all , on AJFA they used Mark IIc+'s and the rhythm was heavily scooped...
